Summary
Collective action and resistance to terrorism: construction of the Bali Peace Park as counter-terrorism. This project will explore how the Bali Peace Park functions as a mechanism for collective resistance to terrorism. It will explore how individuals and communities engage with the Peace Park as a form of counter terrorism. The project will contribute to an understanding of how governments and societies can counter the social impact of terrorism.
Online violent extremist audiences in Australia and the United Kingdom. This project aims to develop an understanding of the role and influence of the internet on violent extremism. Improved communication with heart patients in the context of the gift economy. Coronary Heart Disease is Australia's biggest killer and a patient's diagnosis is a traumatic event. A majority of patients resists the implications of their disease and fails to follow medical recommendations fully. Humanities research enables increased understanding of, and better communication with, heart patients yet has not been extensively used to understand how patients make sense of their new status. This research improves the safety of public transport for workers and passengers with flow-on benefits at local and national levels. Small-scale studies indicate half the Australian non-Muslim population is now anti-Muslim and up to 80% of Muslims are in a siege mentality. This research examines Australian perceptions of the other, of terrorism, of refugees and of fears about these. The project plans to compare long-term settled, parent, and retirement migrants in both urban and regional locations, at home and in institutional care, across six groups: Australian, British, Italian, Chinese, Indian and Vietnamese. High Performance Optical and Electronic Coatings Facility. The main aim of this project is to establish a state-of-the-art optical and electronic coatings facility for the Australian optoelectronics and nanotechnology research community to develop novel technologies of interest to communications, information technology and nanotechnology industries. The facility will allow the fabrication of a range of active and passive devices including photonic integrated circuits. The main aim of this project is to establish a state-of-the-art optical and electronic coatings facility for the Australian optoelectronics and nanotechnology research community to develop novel technologies of interest to communications, information technology and nanotechnology industries. The facility will allow the fabrication of a range of active and passive devices including photonic integrated circuits. The facility is flexible enough to allow the deposition of a range of dielectric and metal layers with different structural, optical and electrical characteristics of fundamental as well as applied interest. This facility may open up new opportunities to develop microcavities, nanocrystals, tunable lasers and detectors, novel cantilevers for atomic force microscopy.
