This project aims to understand the impact that screen behaviours have on children’s quality of life, social skills and family functioning, and co-design feasible, acceptable and effective behavioural and digital strategies to mitigate this impact. Parents are concerned and are seeking urgent help in the persistent and evolving technology climate, where previous strategies are no longer relevant. Expected outcomes include new knowledge of the impact of screen time, and the co-design of innovative and user-friendly strategies developed with families, for families, to manage this. The benefits will include informing future effective and scalable screen time strategies for improved quality of life, social skills, family functioning outcomes.Read moreRead less

The population of migrant and refugee youth in Greater Western Sydney is increasing exponentially each year. Little is understood about these young people’s understanding of and ability to exert their sexual and reproductive health and rights. By centering their voices, we can better understand the social ecology of the barriers they encounter and the factors that facilitate informed sexual and reproductive health decision-making. This will result in a youth-determined model for policy and programming aimed at improving migrant and refugee sexual and reproductive health literacy, wellbeing and agency.Read moreRead less

This project aims to address inactivity in the 3-5 age group through understanding and exploring innovative interactive active play experiences for children, with a view to increasing their physical activity over the long term. This project will be based on empirical research with real children undertaking real interactive experiences in real contexts, in order to understand issues around sustained engagement with these types of systems. We will design and develop solutions that may address the issues and test those interventions in a longitudinal manner. The outcome will be a framework which can be applied in a variety of situations and modalities by designers and developers of such systems, and feed into childhood technology guidelines.

This project aims to examine the impact of apartment design standards on residents’ health and wellbeing. It seeks to (1) identify a refined set of evidence-informed quantifiable policy standards that protect residents’ health and wellbeing; and (2) evaluate their uptake by industry and barriers to implementation. Many design standards are based on intuition and experience rather than empirical evidence, and little is known about whether the standards and thresholds stipulated are sufficient to support health. Expected outcomes include tailored policy-specific recommendations for design policy and the planning of apartment precincts. Benefits include the delivery of convivial, equitable, healthy and sustainable apartment housing.Read moreRead less

Effects of Positive Education during the critical post-school transition. This project will examine if school-based positive education helps young people during their post-school transition, using a mixed method, longitudinal design. Positive education improves the short term mental health of high school students. Its sustained effects are not known, particularly at the post-school stage when young people negotiate challenges in work, learning and relationships. This project will also examine whether a new youth-led Positive Transition Program provides added benefits, using in-the-moment experience sampling and bio-data. This research is anticipated to determine the utility of positive education to improve the transition experience for young people.Read moreRead less

This project aims to investigate the impact on individual wellbeing through use of public aquatic and recreation centres in Australia. Through the use of mixed methods across multiple locations, the project expects to generate new knowledge on the effect on users of different management and service models for the provision of aquatic and recreational infrastructure. Expected outcomes include a quantifiable measure of social and emotional wellbeing that can be utilised by centre management and government. This will help assessment of best practice for maximising community wellbeing, and can guide investment decisions by state and local government.Read moreRead less

This innovative project aims to investigate the direct and indirect effects of a school-based leadership program for primary school-aged children. Schools are ideal settings for developing children’s leadership effectiveness, but there are few examples of evidence-based programs guided by leadership theory. This project will generate new knowledge about the importance of leadership skills for students’ self-efficacy, classroom behaviour, and teachers’ well-being and work-related stress. Expected outcomes of this inter-disciplinary project include a framework for understanding how children’s leadership behaviours shape school culture and an evidence-based program for dissemination in Australian schools. Weight stigma in the preconception, pregnancy and postpartum periods. The overall aim of this project is to develop guidance for the translation of weight stigma evidence into preconception, pregnancy and postpartum obesity-related policy. It focuses on the socio-ecological factors that perpetuate weight stigma in women across the reproductive life phase, that is, in women planning a pregnancy, in women who are pregnant and in mothers who have given birth within a 24-month period.
