This project aims to improve the safety and accessibility of community aged care services for older survivors of psychological trauma, particularly those from diverse populations. We will co-design and test a practice framework that transforms the conceptual principles of trauma-informed care into actionable care behaviours and processes for implementation. Outcomes will include a world-first roadmap to guide implementation of trauma-informed aged care, as well for policy makers to regulate and monitor its delivery. The project will also increase knowledge about the priorities for change within aged care from the perspective of older trauma survivors, and improve understanding of how best to engage this group in co-design.Read moreRead less

Understanding and strengthening the way in which universal health services are provided to pregnant women, children and families has the potential to impact over a million Australian families annually. The findings of this study will have national application as federal, state and territory governments work towards implementing a national approach to child and family health services. The findings will inform effective multidisciplinary collaboration and service integration, address service gaps and duplication and lead to increased access to services. This study will generate new knowledge about characteristics of organisations, service delivery and professions that facilitate or hinder innovation.Read moreRead less

$1,156,546.00
Summary
Researchers in allied health and primary care are partnering with Northern Sydney Medicare Local and the NSW State Falls Program (Clinical Excellence Commission) to establish a multi-disciplinary pathway model for fall prevention. A Multi-centre Randomised Controlled Trial To Compare Nasal Balloon Autoinflation Versus No Nasal Balloon Autoinflation For Otitis Media With Effusion In Aboriginal And Torres Strait Islander Children (the INFLATE Trial)
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$2,534,580.00
Summary
Otitis media with effusion (OME) or ’glue ear’ is a common ear problem in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children. In OME, fluid accumulates in the middle ear. This can cause hearing loss and learning difficulties and lead to surgery. We will see if the use of a simple device in which a child blows up a balloon with their nostrils (nasal balloon autoinflation) helps resolve glue ear, improves hearing and is acceptable for the management of this important ear health problem.

End of life care provides an ideal framework in which to explore the principle of individual autonomy and consumer decision making. Older people at a high risk of dying in 6 months will be recruited from acute care wards, and asked about preferences for involvement in end of life decision making in a standardised interview survey. Surrogate decision makers and physicians will be asked to answer the same questions from the patient's perspective (namely what they think the patient wants). Findings will suggest ways end of life care can be better tailored so that patients can participate in decisions and receive care that is consistent with their wishes.Read moreRead less
Although medical tests and procedures can save lives, sometimes too much medical intervention can be harmful. In low back pain, for example, high numbers of X-ray, CT and MRI scans are provided unnecessarily. There is good evidence that imaging scans for low back pain can cause more harm than good. At the same time, people can miss out on treatments that we know to be effective. This fellowship will enable me to discover ways to ensure people receive the right care for low back pain.

Does the integration of Aboriginal voices in governance processes of public health collaboratives influence equity of access in service delivery? Improving access to services is a key priority in order to improve the wellbeing of Aboriginal people. However there is no rigorous scientific evidence base driving current integration reforms. This project will use innovative methodologies (mathematical, visual, and vocal) which will lead to a performance indicator framework of the relationships between integration, collaboration, equity and access to services within a social model of health. This is a way to move from assessments of Aboriginal participation processes as 'bad, poor and no' to 'good, green and go'.Read moreRead less
