This research will provide new evidence about the conditions and actions that are favourable to innovation leadership. The project will contribute to Australia's efforts to promote cultural and economic innovation through its exploration of innovation leadership in the 'brokering of integrated, socio-economically aligned learning and work'. It will benefit Australian policy makers working to re-articulate the links between education, training and work, and advance conceptual knowledge of the leadership capacities required for multi-level, large-scale, cross-sectoral innovations in non-school-centric innovations in the senior phases of learning.Read moreRead less

Focussing on social connections across racial and religious boundaries, the project directly addresses two areas of immediate national concern: young peoples' wellbeing, and Australia's relationship with its neighbours. The project will generate a new model of sustainable partnership across NGOs and learning institutions to provide youth-led, global education programs for school-aged youth, promoting learning from a local basis about global issues. In creating this shared evidence base the project will benefit two industry sectors (NGOs and Education) and facilitate the development of effective processes toward young people's greater participation in social life.Read moreRead less

Supporting learning amongst 'at risk' individuals is an urgent global challenge, given changes in work and society. New learning spaces are emerging in response. They target the 30% of Australians not served by traditional education and training. New learning spaces are based in social partnerships. They offer distinctive learning relationships, and scope for localised governance and decision-making. They promise enhanced life chances for individuals and improved community-building. This project will (1) build theory to understand new learning spaces; (2) document how they reshape learning relations and practices; and (3) assess claims that they improve learning, governance and outcomes.Read moreRead less
Bubbles on the surface: a place pedagogy of the Narran Lakes. The project will provide Aboriginal, ecological humanities, and pedagogical input into the problem of environmental sustainability in the Murray-Darling Basin, complementing current physical science initiatives. It will have immediate national benefit in the production of educational resources based on alternative and previously invisible stories of water in the Narran Lakes area, an icon site in the Murray-Darling Basin. The findings will have longer term national benefit by identifying the elements of a general pedagogy of place, drawn from the specific local case study of the Narran Lakes, which will be applied in adult and community education.Read moreRead less

The study aims to discover 3-13 yr old children's understandings, perceptions & experiences of physical activity & associated places & spaces. Childhood obesity is a modern 'epidemic' & governments agree that low physical activity levels contribute significantly. Epidemiological & clinical research has been undertaken, but we lack Australian studies that systematically listen to & understand the pivotal voices of children themselves. Failure to develop such theoretically sound, practice-based understandings may mean ineffective interventions that misunderstand children's worlds. This collaborative study unites highly experienced researchers, practitioners & policy makers who will actively involve children in creating & using new knowledge.Read moreRead less
Child Care and Family Service Hubs Impact Study in Rural and Regional Communities. Integration of childcare, health, education and family support services is claimed to be an effective strategy for enhancing outcomes and building community social capital. Integration of childcare, health, education and family support services is claimed to be an effective strategy for enhancing outcomes and building community social capital. Despite international activity around integrating services, particularly in rural/regional locations, there exist no well-validated models of service integration and no clear means of measuring the impact on local communities. In collaboration with five government and community agencies we will trace the development of rural multi-services hubs in Queensland, validate 'best-practice' models and produce a multi-dimensional measure to assess community impact. Potential benefits include a 'toolkit' for facilitating service, tracking interventions and building community social capital.Read moreRead less

Incorporating the findings into the curricula of teacher education will ensure that the project will have sustained long term benefits as well as the immediate application built into the study.Read moreRead less

The project produces benefits to government, universities, Deans and Directors of Graduate Studies and those with a scholarly interest in doctoral education. It identifies, quantifies and explains the relationship between PhD graduates' thesis outcomes (especially, publications) and their professional and community outcomes up to ten years from graduation. The findings will be disseminated as universities, government and academies debate the RQF outcomes and whether the quality and impact of doctorates be included in the next RQF. The findings enable universities to enhance policy and practice to ensure worthwhile outcomes from doctoral programs and graduates. The project advances scholarship about doctorates and research education.Read moreRead less

The completion of formal schooling is a critical point of decision-making for all young Australians, but it is particularly critical for young men and women from the bush, who are often already disadvantaged in the quality of schooling they receive, and their access to facilities and opportunities. This longitudinal study will address a significant research gap in this area, by analysing the potentially limiting effect gender constructs can play in the decision-making and life trajectories of these young adults. By so doing, the study contributes directly to the national interest by improving the social and economic futures of rural Australians.Read moreRead less
