New generation evacuated glazing for emissions reduction in the built environment. Energy consumption in buildings now rivals that of transport and agriculture. A new collaboration between the University of Sydney (inventor of evacuated glazing) and world leading glazing manufacturer, VELUX, will deliver new vacuum insulated windows made from toughened glass that will offer both safety and record performance.
Novel multi-channel and nonlinear Bragg grating devices. High capacity and reliable telecommunications links are essential for many aspects of modern life and work. Optical fibres offer essentially unlimited capacity, but their optimal use requires the transmission of multiple wavelength channels simultaneously. This, in turn, requires the development of special-purpose fibre devices for multiplexing and de-multiplexing these channels, as well as for other optical filtering and switching tasks. ....Novel multi-channel and nonlinear Bragg grating devices. Fibre Bragg gratings are central to many of these devices, and the aim of this project is to develop novel designs for linear and nonlinear Bragg grating devices which may significantly widen the current range of their applications.Read moreRead less
Mechanical stresses in holey fibres. The development of holey fibres constitutes arguably the most exciting development in fibre optics in recent years. We will analyze the mechanical stresses in these fibres, which, together with the optical calculations and associated experiments, will allow us to design novel fibre-based devices. This will allow Nufern to develop new products based on holey fibres.
Optical parametric amplifiers with exceptional qualities using highly nonlinear optical fibre. Current optical fibre networks use only a fraction of their capacity. This is in part because optical amplifiers with enough bandwidth do not exist. However, it will soon become necessary to exploit all of this capacity. This project will create a new highly nonlinear optical fibre with very low loss and tailored dispersion properties. This will then be used to make an optical fibre parametric ampli ....Optical parametric amplifiers with exceptional qualities using highly nonlinear optical fibre. This project aims to demonstrate a large increase in sensitivity, ultra-fast response, and super robust characteristics of nanoscale sensors suitable for harsh environment applications. Sensors in mining, power and aerospace industries must function properly in high temperature, aggressive chemical erosion, and high impact environments. Silicon carbide (SiC) sensors formed using a unique growth process of SiC films on large-diameter silicon wafers can meet these requirements through nanoscale structures. This project expects to bring direct economic benefits to the resource and manufacturing sectors, creating valuable intellectual property and new jobs for Australians.Read moreRead less
Information Systems Enabled Corporate Transformation: Evaluation of Electronic Customer Relationship Management in the Service Sector. Customer relationship management (CRM) is a business and marketing strategy that integrates technology, process and business activities around the customer. Only 30% of electronic CRM efforts have been successfully implemented because stakeholder expectations are typically neglected. This issue underlines the importance of the ?soft? organisational issues involved with the evaluation of information systems. By evaluating the change management process and modelling the impact of e-CRM enabled change, management strategies will be developed to enable its successful implementation. The research will provide a greater understanding for evaluating the performance of e-CRM solutions, as well as uncover opportunities for organisational related change.Read moreRead less

Preventing railway suicide: An open-systems perspective. This project aims to develop an automated suicide risk detection system to reduce the incidence and impact of railway suicide, which has a devastating effect on victims’ families, station staff, train drivers, emergency workers, and bystanders. This project will use open-systems theory to develop two complementary information systems for more effective detection and reporting of suicide risk; use these systems to investigate how different situational factors interact with different combinations of service interventions to influence suicide risk; and share the findings to reduce railway suicide in Australia and overseas.Read moreRead less
Service Ecosystems Management for Collaborative Process Improvement. Australian government agencies currently explore opportunities for streamlining their business processes. A promising approach relates to the improvement of cross-agency processes based on service-enabled technologies. This project will use requirements within Queensland Government for the design of a service ecosystem and methodological and management concepts to derive a general framework for intra-organisational ecosystems. ....Service Ecosystems Management for Collaborative Process Improvement. Though the focus will be on government processes, the project will generalise beyond this scope for a wider uptake of service ecosystems in Australian organisations. This will lead to reduced process costs and risks and will leverage the exploration of new revenue streams, e.g. shared services and reward schemes.Read moreRead less
