This project aims to analyse and define the experiences and expectations of people with disability in rural and remote regions. People accessing the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) are required to complete a personalised service plan, however despite these reforms, people in rural and remote communities currently experience many challenges with the scheme. Using qualitative research methods, the project will investigate people’s experiences engaging with Local Area Coordinators and Planners under the Rural and Remote Strategy 2016-2019 and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Engagement Strategy. The project will provide significant outcomes for Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people with disability in rural and remote areas, disability service providers, and government and non-government policy makers.Read moreRead less

This project aims to develop ground-breaking network models of urban traffic systems to build a new congestion control framework. The purpose of network modelling is to capture the interdependence between different parts of traffic systems, which facilitates studying congestion cascade within the network. The project expects to generate next generation of network models for more effective congestion control. Expected outcomes include novel congestion control technologies that adjust traffic signals in real-time to optimally utilise the available road space. This should provide significant economic and environmental benefits to Australians by easing traffic jams.Read moreRead less
Staffing practices in Aboriginal primary health care services. This project aims to generate new knowledge about the impact of short-term staffing in remote Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services on service acceptability to patients, workload and attitudes of long-term staff and the effectiveness and cost of services. This project aims to generate new knowledge about the impact of short-term staffing in remote Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services on service acceptability to patients, workload and attitudes of long-term staff and the effectiveness and cost of services. The project intends to compare these results to recent findings about the impact of short-term staffing in government-run clinics, in order to quantify and describe the potential positive effect of community control. Expected outcomes include rigorous evidence about the 'fly in/fly out' workforce and the impact of community control which can inform new policy that will stabilise the remote health workforce, save money and contribute to 'closing the gap' in health outcomes.Read moreRead less
Real groups, Hodge theory, and the Langlands program. This mathematics project aims to settle open questions in real groups. The real groups are the fundamental symmetries occurring in nature and are important both in number theory and in the physical sciences. This mathematics project aims to settle open questions in real groups. The real groups are the fundamental symmetries occurring in nature and are important both in number theory and in the physical sciences. In particular, this project aims to reach a comprehensive understanding of Langlands duality for real groups, investigate how Hodge theory can be used to describe the unitary dual, and investigate the micro-local structure of systems of differential equations. Potential benefits include increasing the international stature of mathematics in Australia and improving the quality of the workforce.Read moreRead less

A History of Community Health in Australia. This project aims to complete a comprehensive history of the development of community health centres and services in Australia, including Aboriginal community controlled organisations. It is intended to be significant in showing how the Aboriginal, women's, workers' and other social movements interacted with social and political institutions in crafting the variety of community health services now existing in Australia. It is intended to trace the changing meanings of 'community' and 'health' over the past fifty years. It is anticipated the research will enhance understanding of cultural, political and institutional influences on healthcare in Australia, thereby assisting in improving interventions promoting community health and well-being.Read moreRead less

Modern network science has transformed the study of complex systems and led to innovations in many disciplines. This project intends to develop breakthrough theories for control of complex networked system behaviour via interventions of the link-rewiring type. New approaches will be developed for non-random, assortative and/or structured networks, which are poorly understood and difficult to deal with, despite being the real-world norm and despite their impact. The results will give new insights into epidemic outbreaks and their impact on vulnerable groups (e.g., elderly and indigenous), and provides methods to enforce resilience of infrastructure networks such as power grids, thereby providing significant economic and societal benefits. This project aims to develop a breakthrough methodology and new technology to analyse and integrate large-scale network systems, such as power grids, that involve large networks of components with switching connections. The project expects to create a new theoretical framework to tackle the challenges arising from switching topology resulted from switching connections, and methods to understand their behaviours and design intervention strategies to achieve optimal outcomes. The expected outcome is a practical technology for industry applications, such as smart power grids. This should increase the reliability and resilience of the electricity networks against faults and cyber attacks.

Alcohol management in Indigenous north Australia: policies and responses. Using mixed methods, this project aims to develop knowledge partnerships with Indigenous communities in three regions across northern Australia to build on understandings of how to respond to alcohol misuse more effectively, ensuring that alcohol is managed in ways that are relevant and useful to communities in a wide range of contexts. Alcohol is a major cause of social, legal and health concerns for Indigenous Australians. This has led to significant political involvement in the regulation of alcohol in communities where Australian Indigenous people live. Alcohol management plans have most recently been used as a central device for reducing alcohol-related harms, particularly in remote areas. The project case study results may provide significant benefit at the community level, empowering community groups to effectively engage in and respond to alcohol-related harms.Read moreRead less
