Direct write-microfabrication, where an ultrafast laser is focussed to a small, intense spot and translated under computer control with respect to a target sample, has emerged as a significant enabling technology creating new opportunities in microphotonics. The proposed facility will enable researchers to modify the internal properties of glass blocks and write 'optical wires' (or waveguides). By combining waveguides with other laser written functional components researchers will develop devices capable of processing optical information. Outcomes will include demonstrations of compact lasers and slow light generation.Read moreRead less

Doubling the power of a unique astronomical survey facility. This project aims to double the number of fibres in the spectrograph on the UK Schmidt Telescope and so double the number of stars and galaxies that it can observe simultaneously. This would allow rapid and timely completion of two major projects: the Taipan galaxy survey would be first to test a potential discrepancy in the expansion rate of the universe that may signal new physics, while the FunnelWeb stellar survey would (in tandem ....Doubling the power of a unique astronomical survey facility. This project aims to double the number of fibres in the spectrograph on the UK Schmidt Telescope and so double the number of stars and galaxies that it can observe simultaneously. This would allow rapid and timely completion of two major projects: the Taipan galaxy survey would be first to test a potential discrepancy in the expansion rate of the universe that may signal new physics, while the FunnelWeb stellar survey would (in tandem with two space missions) identify potential nearby exoplanets and trace the history of the Milky Way. The benefits include high scientific impact for the two surveys, international showcasing of the Australian Starbug technology, and a national astronomical survey facility for the next decade.Read moreRead less

An ultra-wideband radio receiver for the Parkes 64-metre radio telescope: This project aims to construct a state-of-the-art ultra-wide-band receiver and signal processing system for the Parkes 64-metre radio telescope. The receiver will operate across the entire 700 megahertz to four gigahertz band with outstanding sensitivity and polarimetric performance, providing a unique capability for high-time-resolution wide-bandwidth astronomy. It is expected to deliver enhanced science outcomes for a wide range of projects and greatly improve the telescope's operational efficiency, extending its lifetime into the Square Kilometre Array era. Key science projects include tests of theories of relativistic gravitation, including the search for gravitational waves, probing neutron star interiors and investigations of the magnetic structure of our galaxy.Read moreRead less

This project proposes novel low-cost miniature devices for spectroscopic, spatial, and temporal manipulation of infrared and terahertz waves, which are important for security and short range communication applications. By enabling the modulation of infrared and terahertz signals, the intended outcome is a platform for imaging applications, detection of chemical composition of objects, and future high-bandwidth communications. Using microfabrication techniques, the project plans to create metamaterials integrated with micro-electro-mechanical systems, which dynamically vary their electromagnetic properties. This technology would enable the creation of new devices that can controllably absorb, reflect or transmit infrared and terahertz signals.Read moreRead less
