DomeLab: an ultra-high resolution experimental fulldome. DomeLab - an ultra-high resolution experimental fulldome: This project will establish the first ultra-high resolution (4000 x 4000 pixels) experimental fulldome in Australia (DomeLab). This fulldome facility will provide a powerful immersive dome-based video projection environment. Summary
Tuberculosis (TB) is the world’s leading infectious killer, with the failure of global control responsible for the vast majority of Australia’s cases. Using our robustly developed software platform, we have performed several country-level studies to predict the future burden of disease and compare the impact of alternative responses to controlling the epidemic. In this project, we will extend our platform to perform simulations at the global level and answer key questions in TB control.

Experts predict an exponential growth in the amount of data that will be captured, generated and archived. Australia has made significant progress towards addressing some of the opportunities and infrastructure challenges posed by such rapid increase in data volumes. However, these investments do not address the growing need to process data. Conventional supercomputers are unable to meet the challenges of the data explosion. The large gap in latency and bandwidth between the processor, memory and disk subsystems means that the processor is often idle waiting to fetch data. This project will investigate the utility of grid computing in the detection of breast cancer from magnetic resonance (MR) images. The large quantity of data acquired using MR imaging is difficult for clinicians to review and the cost of missed or incorrect detection is high. Summary
Novel statistical algorithms and methods to quantify and partition pleiotropy between complex traits in populations. A fundamental question in biology is how common genetic effects are shared between traits or groups. For example, is cognition or human behaviour genetically identical across genders or across human population groups? This project will address these questions using multiple independent genome-wide association studies.
