This project aims to examine the work and study cultures of architecture in Australia, in relation to professional identity, and in terms of impact on wellbeing, with a whole-of-career scope spanning education to retirement. It will generate the first comprehensive account of work-related wellbeing problems for both architectural practitioners and students, via qualitative and quantitative methods and a vigorous engagement with the profession. Expected outcomes include two toolkits to assist the profession to support cultural change across educational, workplace and institutional settings. This should provide significant benefits for the wellbeing of architects at all career stages, and also support the long-term viability of the sector.Read moreRead less
The architecture of Australia's Muslim pioneers. This project will survey the remnant architecture of Australia's Muslim cameleers who played a vital role in the discovery, exploration and settlement of Australia. The project will generate three-dimensional visualisations of these settlements and academic publications in addition to material for the public education programs operated by the South Australian Museum.

Gateways to Justice: improving video-mediated communications for justice participants. Australia will be better protected from terrorism and crime if courts are able to make effective use of high-quality video evidence, both from scientific experts and from key witnesses who cannot be produced in person for security reasons. Appropriate application of the technology can also increase effective and timely access to justice for other justice participants including indigenous people in remote communities. The project contributes to the take-up of frontier technologies by developing a best practice model for using video testimony in justice settings, and identifying the social and environmental conditions necessary for successful implementation.Read moreRead less

Aim is to document historical cultural impacts on the landscape of the Adelaide Hills Face Zone, to identify and document sites of cultural heritage significance and to develop selected sites as cultural tourism destinations. The study will test developing methodologies for the interpretation of cultural landscapes with potential to pioneer the application of cultural heritage management strategies to a broad landscape. University departments and industry groups from diverse backgrounds will collaborate to develop management strategies and cultural tourism opportunities in a significant landscape. Outcomes will include improved planning strategies and new economic opportunities for semi-rural and rural communities.Read moreRead less
Designing Learning Spaces for Diversity, Inclusion and Participation. This project aims to provide evidence-based guidance on how to design and/or modify mainstream schools to make it easier for students with disabilities to participate. It seeks to inform architects, educators, and policy makers about disabled students' spatial requirements and to develop strategies and tools to support the process of co-designing schools with people with lived experience of disability. The outcomes will includ ....Designing Learning Spaces for Diversity, Inclusion and Participation. The outcomes will include an inclusive learning spaces design framework. This is expected to benefit all students' access and meaningful involvement in learning through the development of more inclusive learning spaces. The research is significant because it integrates previously dissociated knowledge from architecture, education and health.Read moreRead less

Space-based space surveillance with robust computer vision algorithms. This project aims to develop computer vision algorithms to detect man-made objects in space. These algorithms function on nanosatellite platforms, enabling space-based space surveillance. This technology is expected to provide always-on monitoring of the Earth's orbit to enhance existing defence infrastructure and protect vital space assets, including communications and navigational satellites, in Earth’s orbit from collisions and covert sabotage. Increased space use by government and civilian agencies opens up opportunities for the space industry. This project is expected to develop Australia’s space surveillance capabilities, protect space assets and capture a growing market.Read moreRead less

Missiles present a major military and terrorist threat to aircraft and ships. A possible method to detect them is an infrared imaging system which is sensitive to a missile's spectrally unique rocket propulsion exhaust. It is both dangerous and expensive to conduct field trials; so simulation is used extensively. This project aims to use high performance computing to accelerate the slowest parts of the industrial partner's existing simulations: the generation of simulated infrared images.
This project will improve the competitiveness of the manufacturer of infrared threat and warning systems and provide research training in an area of high performance computing.

Visual tracking with environmental constraints. By incorporating high level scene understanding into visual tracking, this project will improve the capacity to monitor and analyse complex patterns of activity in video. This has many applications in public safety and security, but the project will demonstrate it on the challenging task of tracking players during an Australian Football League (AFL) game to gather statistics on their performance.
