Computational haemodynamics system for prediction of risk of rupture of cerebral aneurysms. Every year about 2000 Australians suffer a ruptured aneurysm in the brain and some 750 of these die within 4 weeks. Since there is an increase in the detection of unruptured aneurysms, especially in healthy young people, there is an urgent need to be able to decide which lead to rupture and to provide suitable treatment options. This project, which will provide markedly improved means of patient-specific risk determination for aneurysm rupture, will have significant impact in reducing associated costs on the national health burden due to cerebral hemorrhage and stroke, on community productivity and disability and on more efficient targeting of expensive and dangerous brain surgery.Read moreRead less
Optimal Transcutaneous Energy Transmission System (TETS) for an Implanted Artificial Heart. This project aims to devise the best way to get electrical power to devices implanted in the human body. The immediate application, the VentrAssist artificial heart, is under pilot trial, in three people to date. This project aims to devise the best way to get electrical power to devices implanted in the human body. The immediate application, the VentrAssist artificial heart, is under pilot trial, in three people to date. In the trial model, the electric lead passes through a hole in the skin, which poses a high infection risk. This project will research a novel, provisionally patented method of inductively transmitting power and signals across the skin, exploiting new ferromagnetic materials, biocompatible coatings and software-controlled electronic circuits. The method should be efficient, secure and infection-proof, with world market potential for all powered medical implants.Read moreRead less

We will then test this map with special gene markers which will reveal the occult segmental pattern in adult mice. This work will give us a new way of understanding the organisation of brainstem centres that control breathing, cardiovascular functions and emotional states.Read moreRead less

The high-speed confocal microscope live cell recording system we are establishing represents new generation equipment. It allows quality imaging of selected subcellular regions of live cells combined with simultaneous electrophysiological recording at rates and sensitivity hitherto not possible. This equipment provides a window of opportunity for major research advances in that it allows real-time two and three-dimensional imaging of fundamental cellular activities that previously could not be viewed. It will allow major advances in priority health-related research and will provide an ideal research tool to introduce young scientists and students to cutting edge research.Read moreRead less

The ability to perform exercise is fundamental to human health and welfare. This ability depends upon the co-ordination by the brain of respiratory and cardiovascular function, such that the delivery of oxygen to exercising muscles is maximised. This project will test the idea that there is a specific group of neurons in the brain that drive both the respiratory and cardiovascular changes that occur during exercise, and will determine the location and functions of such neurons. Such new knowledge will help us understand how the brain optimises the ability of the body to perform exercise. This is of fundamental importance in sports science, a field in which Australia excels.Read moreRead less

Stroke caused by vascular diseases is the second greatest single killer, which is taking away thousands of lives and costing billions every year in Australia. Improving the existing clinical treatments of these diseases is thus of utmost urgency. This project is targeted to developing a reliable Hemodynamic model through comprehensive experimental validation approach. It will not only foster a more in-depth research of vascular diseases but also provide a virtual forecasting tool for physicians or surgeons to develop guidance on diagnosis and therapeutic planning of clinical treatment, which brings great socio-economic benefit to the health of the Australian community.Read moreRead less

Calcium movements into and out of the cytoplasm of smooth muscle cells are regulated primarily by a variety of proteins located in the plasma membrane and in the sarcoplasmic reticulum and play a central role in controlling the contractile state of smooth muscle. Understanding the mechanisms that control intracellular calcium levels is fundamental to understanding smooth muscle function. This project will employ a unique approach, involving the use of mice with targeted disruptions to genes encoding key calcium transport proteins, to gain new knowledge on the contribution of various calcium handling pathways to overall control of smooth muscle function.Read moreRead less

Molecular detail of its pumping mechanism is, however, lacking and its regulation is still unclear. We will use rapid reaction methods on purified enzyme in vitro to locate the rate-determining step of the enzyme cycle, determine its mechanism, investigate its regulation by sodium concentration, phosphorylation and membrane composition, and isolate its charge-transporting steps. The results will have immediate impact on the understanding of the enzyme's mechanism, its metabolic control and its role in disease.Read moreRead less
