Sonification for complex, mission-critical work environments. Human operators must often pay attention to an immediate task while monitoring background information, but intrusive alarms often capture operators' attention inappropriately. We investigate how continuous auditory information ("sonification") can provide low-level background information when all is normal, yet capture attention to abnormalities only when needed. Supercomputing underpins a wide range of areas of importance to the Australian economy; mining, agriculture, engineering and medical research to name a few. It is of critical importance that software solutions in these areas behave correctly. This project will develop software tools and techniques to help locate errors in such applications.
Minimising the inappropriate and unnecessary hospital admissions of frail older people. The health system will continue to experience massive pressures in both fiscal and human resource terms. Older patients present with multiple, complex conditions and tend to be admitted because clinicians often do not have the time to explore other options. Experts predict an exponential growth in the amount of data that will be captured, generated and archived. Australia has made significant progress towards addressing some of the opportunities and infrastructure challenges posed by such rapid increase in data volumes. However, these investments do not address the growing need to process data. Conventional supercomputers are unable to meet the challenges of the data explosion. The large gap in latency and bandwidth between the processor, memory and disk subsystems means that the processor is often idle waiting to fetch data.
