The amount of network data available has exploded in recent years: software systems, social networks and biological systems have millions of nodes and billions of edges with multivariate attributes. Their size and complexity makes these data sets hard to exploit. More efficient ways to understand the data are needed. This project will design, implement and evaluate visualisation methods for massive multivariate network data sets. This research is expected to be used by Australian software development, biotechnology and security companies to exploit their data.Read moreRead less

Developing a Unified Theory of Episodic Memory. This project aims to develop a model of episodic memory and to apply the model to both adult and child development data. Unlike current approaches, the model is expected to address multiple memory tasks including item recognition, associative recognition, source recognition and cued recall, and also aims to address reaction time data, allowing different sources of interference causing forgetting in adults to be identified. By addressing both encoding and retrieval processes, the model can assess how changes in different sources of interference modulate performance through the trajectory of early development. Hierarchical Bayesian estimation aims to enable a simultaneous account of multiple tasks and support future deployment in applied contexts.Read moreRead less

Australia has taken a pioneering lead in the design of high speed multi-hull ferries and continues to extend their speed, range and payload performance. Design leadership and the technology which supports it are crucial to maintaining the existing large share of the international market for such vessels. Recently freight and military transport vessels have been exposed to much more severe wave conditions than passenger vessels and this has increased the need for improved prediction of structural loads due to waves. This project directly addresses that need by computation and model testing validation. The industry is a significant export earner and employer within Australia and so the project directly underpins those national benefits. Read moreRead less
Asymmetric and nonlinear unsteady loads on high speed ferries. Large high speed catamarans are expanding their domain of application from coastal passenger routes to ocean freight and military service. This is shifting operability criteria from motions and passenger discomfort to structural load limitations in severe wave environments. This project investigates large wave structural load prediction. Large waves lead to strongly non-linear responses, invalidating many methods of analysis. Prediction of loads on the transverse structure is also not possible with many prediction methods. This project will develop and validate by experiment fully time domain computational methods for the prediction of asymmetric structural loads due to large wavesRead moreRead less
Automated internet warnings to prevent viewing of minor-adult sex images. Since the advent of the internet and digital cameras, the market for child exploitation material (CEM) has boomed. This project aims to explore how the visual appearance of warning messages influences internet users. It plans to conduct a randomised controlled experiment with naïve participants on a real-life website to test the effectiveness of messages designed to discourage viewers of legal ‘barely legal’ pornography. It is anticipated that results will assist policing efforts by indicating whether warnings can be used to dissuade first-time CEM viewers and whether differences exist between harm or deterrent-focused messages.Read moreRead less
Improving Signal Detection Range of Active Seismic Monitoring in Mines. This project will develop a new generation of sensors that will process incoming seismic waves from an active source to accurately estimate the properties of underground rock mass in real time. This will lead to safer mining operations that will decrease the number of injuries and deaths. A probability graph model will be used to fuse measurements from different sensors to produce more accurate estimates of the rock mass. This will lead to safer mining operations that will decrease the number of injuries and deaths. A probability graph model will be used to fuse measurements from different sensors to produce more accurate estimates of the rock mass. A new low-cost seismic source will excite large areas of rock mass for continuous monitoring of the changes in stress and fracture density caused by mining. This will lead to methodologies that will significantly improve mining operations and increase Australia’s productivity in the mining sector.Read moreRead less

The aim of this proposal is to accelerate research across a range of disciplines using high performance computing which is currently limited by the present available computing power. These disciplines include: mathematical modelling of magnetic resonance imaging, computational chemistry, engineering fluid dynamics, climate system modelling including atmosphere, ocean and ice sheet simulations. The University of Tasmania, the Antarctic CRC and Australian Antarctic Division are combining resources to share in a joint facility of much greater capability. The proposed new high performance computing facility will increase in the computational power (over a weighted average of our benchmarks) by 13, an 8 fold increase in memory, and a 10 fold increase in disk storage. This new facility will allow these research groups to maintain their internationally leading edge status in high performance computing.Read moreRead less
