The aim of the study is to reduce the burden and distress associated with cancer chemotherapy. Cancer chemotherapy is associated with physical (nausea, fatigue, hair loss, infection) and psychosocial (fear, anxiety, worry about family) effects that cause significant distress. Patients experience a highly level of pre-treatment anxiety and for many this distress lasts across the course of treatment. Over the past decade there has been a dramatic shift in chemotherapy delivery to the outpatient setting. This means that patients are now responsibile for monitoring their own health at home and may need to use self-care strategies to deal with the many adverse effects of treatment. Pre-treatment education has usually focused on providing information about the facts of treatment, i.e. likelihood of nausea, rather than preparing the patient for the experience of treatment or helping them to manage the self-care demands associated with receiving treatment in the outpatient setting. The innovative education program tested here is the first of its type to draw on high level research evidence about preparing patients for potentially threatening medical procedures, tailoring this education to the individual situation of the patient and coaching the patient to implement evidence-based self-care behaviours and to use stress reduction techniques across the course of treatment.Read moreRead less

This project aims to address serious deficits in the operation of the National Disability Insurance Scheme for one of its largest participant groups: people with psychosocial disability. This project expects to develop new data on scheme outcomes, cost-effectiveness and participant experiences to develop an appropriate and implementable program logic to improve supports for this group. Expected outcomes will be scheme reform by implementing a new framework of supports for psychosocial disability and data to improve the operation of national policy for this group more broadly. This should provide significant benefits for the cost-effective operation of the National Disability Insurance Scheme and build research capacity in disability policy.Read moreRead less

Seizures accompanied by fever (febrile) are common in early childhood. Most forms of epilepsy and febrile seizures have an inherited component. Progress in finding genes for common forms of epilepsy has been slow, probably because they are due to the interaction of a number of genes. Four genes for rare epilepsies with single gene inheritance have been identified. These genes code for subunits of ion channels in cells. We study families where many individuals have seizures and carefully diagnose the seizures types. This work has resulted in the description of 5 new inherited epilepsies and led to discovery of 3 of the 4 known genes. The most important new inherited epilepsy is Generalized Epilepsy with Febrile Seizures Plus (GEFS+). GEFS+ accounts for many children with febrile seizures restricted to early childhood, or where seizures continue into mid-childhood. GEFS+ families may contain an individual with severe generalized epilepsy with intellectual disability. In a Tasmanian family with GEFS+, we found a gene defect in the sodium channel of nerve cells in the brain. We plan to study more families with GEFS+. We believe that specific severe childhood epilepsies may occur in families with GEFS+. If so, then the underlying cause of these serious disorders may be gene defects of GEFS+. Finding such genes will help to understand the basis of seizures and ultimately lead to targeted therapies. The second major focus of our work on GEFS+ is to use family studies to understand how different types of seizures are inherited, and to gain insights into the gene interactions underlying common epilepsies. We plan to study isolated cases of GEFS+ for the gene defects found in families. This strategy will reveal whether the same genes are important in the genetics of the common epilepsies.Read moreRead less
LIM KINASE 1 (LIMK1) AND METASTASIS, THE SEARCH FOR LIMK1 INHIBITORS

We have found that LIM kinase (LIMK1), a protein that was discovered in our laboratory, plays an important role in controlling the ability of tumour cells to spread, a process called metastasis. Thus, this protein becomes an important target for the development of new drug therapies to prevent the spread of cancer. Importantly, we have demonstrated that (1) inhibiting LIMK1 blocks the formation of metastatic tumours in mice, and (2) introduction of this protein into tumour cells makes them more invasive. In addition, we find that the level of LIMK1 is much higher in human tumour cell lines that have the propensity to easily form tumours in mice. Also, measuring the level of this protein in cancer cells that spread to other organs shows that it is at significantly elevated levels when compared to normal tissue. The goals of this research are to: (1) understand whether the ability of LIMK1 to regulate tumour spreading and invasiveness correlates with its ability to control metastasis; (2) examine in human tumour samples whether the levels of LIMK1 correlate with the development of metastatic tumours; and (3) search for drugs that can inhibit the activity of this protein. The results from this research will be highly significant because LIMK1 levels are likely to be an important marker for which tumours will become metastatic. It is possible that, at the time of tumour diagnosis, LIMK1 measurements will enable the clinician to predict whether an individual tumour will become metastatic. Secondly, this protein is a novel drug development target. Drugs that inhibit this protein may block the ability of tumours to invade and metastasise.Read moreRead less
A Cluster RCT Of A Novel Psychological Intervention To Reduce Depression Among At-risk Older Adults Transitioning To Residential Aged Care
Funder

Funding Amount
$893,152.00
Summary
Depression is common in aged care facilities, with many older adults finding the transition extremely difficult. We have developed a simple intervention to help new residents, including those with dementia, to adjust to life in aged care. This program focuses on key aspects of psychological wellbeing, and is designed for widespread use in aged care. We will evaluate the intervention to determine if it is superior to current care approaches in reducing depression and improving quality of life.
This Centre of Research Excellence will translate the best available evidence to improve cancer outcomes through better management of infections in cancer patients, a rapidly growing group. We will establish new research networks to detect emerging multi resistant infections, develop guidelines on how to manage them, implement locally successful programs that have been shown to save lives nationally and validate new practice changing immune, bioinformatics and diagnostic technologies.
Massively Parallel Sequencing And PCR Optimised For DNA-based Diagnostics And Discovery
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$201,664.00
Summary
The next generation of medical diagnostics and discovery in disease research will involve the marriage of PCR, a tool used to amplify large amounts of DNA from small starting quantities, and next generation sequencing, a way to sequence lots and lots of DNA on a single instrument run. This study aims to describe methods which allow scientists to screen hundreds of disease genes in hundreds of people simultaneously with high accuracy and high efficiency.

This project aims to systematically investigate the experience, outcomes and economic impact of people with disability moving into specialist disability accommodation housing. Health, wellbeing, community participation, support outcomes and lived experience of people with disability will be measured before moving and over 2 years after they move. The project provides the opportunity to identify the personal, disability, housing and support factors that shape outcomes for people with disability. The intended outcome is comprehensive knowledge that can inform policy, build evidence across housing, technology, support and disability sectors and ultimately benefit people with disability by generating innovative practice in housing and support.Read moreRead less

Development Of Vinorelbine As A Tablet Based Therapy To Cure Ectopic Pregnancies
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$361,594.00
Summary
Ectopic pregnancies occur if the pregnancy implants in the Fallopian tube. They can be deadly and most are treated surgically. We will examine the exciting possibility that instead of surgery, ectopic pregnancies may be cured with a tablet taken just once. We will perform laboratory studies and a clinical trial, giving vinorelbine to women with ectopic pregnancies.
