Summary
Stroke is common, occurring in approximately 50,000 Australians each year. About a third of people with stroke die within the first 12 months but we do not know how many survive or how well they manage in the longer term. We aim to interview 10-year survivors of stroke to assess how much help they need to undertake everyday activities, and how much the stroke is costing the Australian community. This information will help us in planning the health care needs for stroke patients in future years.

Summary
Stroke is the third most common cause of death in Australia, and is more common in the older age groups. Because the population most at risk of developing stroke is growing faster than the rest of the population, it is likely that there will be a large increase in the number of strokes occurring in coming years. At 1 year after stroke about one-third of patients have died, a third remain severely disabled and a third recover with minimal disability. In Australia, there is no information on outco ....Stroke is the third most common cause of death in Australia, and is more common in the older age groups. At 1 year after stroke about one-third of patients have died, a third remain severely disabled and a third recover with minimal disability. In Australia, there is no information on outcome beyond 5 years. It is thought that at 10 years after stroke about 70% of patients will have died, and a further 5-10% will have had another nonfatal stroke. The aim of this study is to assess the long-term outcome of patients with stroke. These will include measures of survival, stroke recurrence, and ability to perform usual daily activities. The use of health care and community resources and the associated costs of this will also be assessed. Information on survival patterns, stroke recurrence, disability and costs will be of great value for health service planning. Summary
The devastating loss of movement in the hand after stroke could potentially be addressed, but we currently lack of research investigating treatment interventions. This randomised controlled trial will compare the routine interventions of botulinum toxin to botulinum toxin plus best-practice therapy for both cost and clinical outcome. Findings from this trial will provide the necessary information to make decisions about what will improve spasticity and function in the hand and arm after stroke.

AVERT-DOSE is an international, investigator-led clinical trial, developed in Australia but recruiting >2500 patients from 6 countries around the world. In this trial we will establish the optimal model of early mobility rehabilitation for people with acute stroke. The protocols we develop will be suitable for adoption in clinical practice in developed and developing countries and help reduce the unacceptably high personal and community burden of stroke-related disability world wide.

AVERT is a large, international clinical trial that tests whether introducing early and frequent exercise helps reduce the unacceptably high burden of death and disability associated with stroke. We are also testing if the intervention is cost effective. This trial will provide reliable evidence to guide clinical practice. If positive, broad implementation in both developed and developing countries is likely, thus helping to reduce the global burden of stroke related death and disability.

Summary
"Clot busting" treatment is the only approved medical treatment for the commonest type of stroke, ischaemic stroke. However, uptake of treatment remains poor, mainly due to the known major risk of bleeding in the brain. STAY ENCHANTED is an international clinical trial to investigate whether "clot-busting" can be made safer using a lower dose and/or immediate blood pressure lowering. A safer more effective regime could have a major global health impact.
Family-Led Rehabilitation After Stroke In India - The ATTEND Trial

The majority of people with stroke live in low and middle-income countries, with little or no access to stroke rehabilitation. This trial aims to demonstrate that a low-cost, family-led rehabilitation program can increase independence after stroke. This collaboration, involving Australian, Indian and UK researchers will involve 12 hospitals in India and coordinated by the George Institute for Global Health and the Indian Institute for Public Health.

This project addresses the impact of dental insurance on use of dental services and oral health outcomes to investigate the effect of insurance on dental visit patterns and mix of dental services provided, and examine how the cost of dental care is related to outcomes such as tooth loss and quality of life.
