Summary
Australian Governance and Regulation Network (AGaRN). By speaking truth to power, and finding out who gets what, when, where and how, AGaRN seeks to build knowledge through collaborations and create a national centre of excellence in governance and regulation. Focusing on governance, or steering society through networks (public, private and voluntary), it seeks to improve the policymaking and regulatory capacity of Australian governments by providing better evidence-based policy advice. Through AUSSGrid (Australian Social Science Data Grid) it will access and make available policy-relevant academic and governmental databases; build a policy-based information gateway; and unlock historical and interview data by making it available in digitised form.

It is a major theoretical and empirical analysis of corporate governance's impact on public administration from governance, management, and legal perspectives, drawing on private sector and international comparisons. It will develop an integrated cross-government framework for corporate governance and customized guidance according to organisational type. Judicial Officers and Workload Allocation. Courts and judges constitute a key social and legal institution with a distinctive obligation to maintain the rule of law. The knowledge produced by this research will benefit the judiciary, the courts, government and the public they serve. Research findings about the allocation of judicial work will be used by courts and government to shape policy in recruitment, selection and professional development. Meta-regulation and the Regulation of Law. Meta-regulation means the regulation of regulation (eg state regulation of corporate risk management systems). Resourcing Public Law Enforcement Agencies in the 21st Century; Coercion, Sale and Gift. This project will analyse three basic means of enhancing the resources of public law enforcement agencies: circumstances wherein police command cooperation from private institutions; those where police buy and sell services; and those where police are the beneficiaries of private sponsorship. The potentials and limits of these three forms of exchange will be studied in each Australian State and Territory, in ....Resourcing Public Law Enforcement Agencies in the 21st Century; Coercion, Sale and Gift. Conceiving and Implementing National Integrity Systems Assessments (NISA). Integrity and corruption are conceptually linked opposites. Integrity systems (or 'ethics regimes') are the most powerful tools for dealing with corruption. They involve a range of institutions, law, procedures, practices and attitudes which encourage integrity and discourage/sanction its absence among public servants and those who might wish to corrupt them. A 30-month action-research project spearheaded by the Department of Criminology, to reassess and redirect the Justice Department's "Safer Communities" strategy. This sophisticated strategy has experienced extensive program drift, and key objectives and outcomes must be redefined.
