Economic modelling for Australia and the USA: forecasts, policy analysis and comparative studies of technology and labour market adjustment. This project involves: a fundamental overhaul of MONASH, a widely used detailed dynamic model of the Australian economy; the creation of MONASH-USA for the United States; and several model-based Australia/US comparisons. MONASH's database and parameters will be updated, and its theoretical specification improved. MONASH-USA will be an advance over existing ....Economic modelling for Australia and the USA: forecasts, policy analysis and comparative studies of technology and labour market adjustment. This project involves: a fundamental overhaul of MONASH, a widely used detailed dynamic model of the Australian economy; the creation of MONASH-USA for the United States; and several model-based Australia/US comparisons. MONASH's database and parameters will be updated, and its theoretical specification improved. MONASH-USA will be an advance over existing US models and will generate policy results of interest both in the United States and Australia. MONASH-USA will have an excellent database and is likely to produce insights on parameter estimation. These will be applicable in Australia. Together, MONASH and MONASH-USA will facilitate comparative studies of technology and labour-market performance.Read moreRead less
Financial development, liberalisation and productivity growth. The analysis performed in this project will provide some new insights into the role of financial policies in bolstering productivity growth. This issue deserves more attention from the policy circle given that a better understanding of the mechanisms by which finance affects growth performance allows policy makers to evaluate the costs and benefits associated with liberalising and deepening the financial systems, thus enabling the formulation of effective financial policies. This understanding is critical to achieve the Australian policy makers' objective of promoting financial stability and strengthening growth.Read moreRead less

The research analyses how Australia should best structure its government to maximise long-term economic performance in terms of economic growth and the optimal provision of public goods such as health, education and other public infrastructure. The optimal division of revenue raising and spending responsibilities between the federal government, State governments and other sub-national bodies like city and regional councils will be rigorously assessed from an economic perspective. The research will lead to recommendations regarding improvements in the structure of Australia's government sector, particularly the extent and nature of fiscal decentralisation, capable of improving productivity and future living standards.Read moreRead less
Time-consistent macroeconomic policy in nonlinear models. Efforts to use fiscal policy for macro-stabilisation have led to elevated debt levels and possible default in many countries. Monetary and Fiscal Policy under Imperfect Knowledge. This project lays out an agenda exploring the consequences of imperfect knowledge for macroeconomic dynamics and stabilisation policy. Learning dynamics are central to understanding aggregate fluctuations in periods during which agents have limited information about their environment, as has been the case during and after the Global Financial Crisis. The agenda comprises two lines of inquiry. The first develops theoretical issues relating to ....Monetary and Fiscal Policy under Imperfect Knowledge. The first develops theoretical issues relating to the design and implementation of monetary and fiscal policy under imperfect knowledge. The second adduces empirical evidence on the classes of possible beliefs that any macroeconomic model should account for.Read moreRead less

In light of those determinants, the project expects to develop original macroeconomic models integrating firm dynamics into optimal taxation frameworks. ....Supporting Entry and Growth of Australian Businesses via Tax and Transfers. This project aims to characterise the optimal tax treatment of business income for insurance and efficiency purposes. Using new data for Australia, the project expects to first identify key determinants of businesses creation, growth and exit, before and after COVID-19. In light of those determinants, the project expects to develop original macroeconomic models integrating firm dynamics into optimal taxation frameworks. Expected outcomes include formulating fiscal policies that provide adequate stimulus to businesses, by balancing public insurance and income inequality. This should deliver evidence-based inputs to promote Australia's post-pandemic recovery, through the design of a fairer and more efficient business tax and transfer system.Read moreRead less
