Summary
My research will use economics to help improve surgery outcomes. Clinical and policy recommendations in surgery often come from a relatively low evidence base. I will make use of detailed data registries of previous recipients of hip and knee surgery (St. Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne) and Fontan heart surgery (Royal Children’s Hospital Melbourne) to develop advanced economic models of surgery outcomes. My aim is to use these models to improve real-world health policies in surgery.

The proposed research will examine the use of targeted cancer therapies in Australia. At present there is little evidence around how these medications are being used in the real world, medical services their use requires, and costs associated with their use. Analysing linked, routinely collected health data, this project will generate new scientific and methodological knowledge about the use and impact of targeted cancer therapies available via publicly funded access programs in Australia.

The Asia-Pacific is home to 60% of the global burden of tuberculosis and an increasing proportion of Australia's immigrant population. Although most targets relating to this disease are likely to be achieved, patterns of tuberculosis transmission in the Asia-Pacific are not fully understood and the possibility of regional hotspots exists. We aim to use mathematical techniques to examine the way in which tuberculosis is transmitted from person to person in populations within our region.

Networks analysis is a powerful suite of statistical techniques that will be used to develop simulations of disease and poor health outcomes through an Australian injecting drug user network, a Laos/Vietnam based cohort of men who have sex with men (MSM) and the 2009 H1N1 influenza cohort. Development of robust predictive models of disease and health outcomes provides novel opportunities for identifying and developing finely targeted intervention and harm-minimisation strategies.

Hyperpolarization-activated cyclic nucleotide-gated (HCN) channels play an important role as pacemakers in the cardiac and nervous systems. HCN channel dysfunction is implicated in a number of disorders including neuropathic pain and epilepsy. My aim is to determine the kinetics and voltage dependence of HCN channels in human peripheral nerve in vivo. Understanding these channels is a prerequisite to the development of safe targeted therapies against neuropathic pain.
