Virtually everyone's life has been affected by cardiovascular disease (CVD) in some way. There are no routine community-based tests to identify asymptomatic CVD due to current tests being invasive, expensive, time-consuming or high radiation exposure. A low cost, very low radiation test from existing machines used for osteoporosis screening can assess a measure of asymptomatic CVD. This fellowship seeks to develop this test for community-based screening strategies.

Dementia is the pre-eminent medical challenge of our times as it affects 34 million individuals and will quadruple by 2050. This research therefore aims to develop new preventative and therapeutic strategies for dementia. Seven different studies are proposed, ranging from new stem-cell treatments for testing in rodents, to human clinical trials looking at the preventative effects of physical and mental exercise. These are linked by a central idea of boosting the brain’s neuroplasticity.

Bone and joint problems and cardiovascular disease (CVD) are common in general practice. My research will provide high quality information on how to prevent these conditions in general practice. For example, the studies test: how assessments of people’s risk of a disease might be used to improve their lifestyle behaviours; a new way for GPs to identify patients at high risk of CVD and ways to prevent osteoarthritis progression and to improve bone health in young women and children.

The many Australians with kidney disease experience higher rates of cardiovascular events. Some of the highest rates of cardiovascular events and mortality are seen in people with kidney failure. Currently available treatments are inadequate at reducing this risk indicating an urgent need for new therapies. The program will investigate the effect of little used but readily available, promising interventions to assess their potential to reduce cardiovascular events for people with kidney disease.

The relationship between diabetes and periodontal disease, both of which are high among Indigenous Australians, is established. This study seeks to explore the prevalence of periodontal disease among this population with diabetes, and to determine if implementation of a periodontal intervention leads to improved glycaemic control. There may be benefit in applying this model to other areas of Indigenous health research.
