A history of press photography in Australia. Press photography has long influenced how Australians have understood themselves and their world. In collaboration with the National Library of Australia and the Walkley Foundation, the project explores the evolving role of photographs in breaking news, and historical shifts in photographic technologies, media practices and ethics.

We plan to use kernel methods, a novel machine learning technique, for computer vision problems, such as scene analysis and real time object recognition. Such capabilities are relevant for the design of intelligent and adaptive systems, suitable for complex real world environments. This project investigates the impact of increased funding (government and private) and new scholarship on the curating of art exhibitions, and traces the reconfiguration of Australia’s art history that took place in exhibitions during this period.

This project is a cross-cultural and interdisciplinary study of the multifarious reincarnations of Charlie Chaplin's The Tramp across the world's film, theatre, television and advertising industries over the last nine decades. It has focused instead on technology, religion, economics, social structure, politics and ideology as the dominant forces in society.
