Demographic consequences of Asian disasters: family dynamics, social capital and migration patterns. This study of the long term demographic consequences of Asian disasters will contribute to development of more effective governmental policies on disaster mitigation, preparedness and reconstruction/recovery, thus assisting to reduce the human and material losses from natural disasters.
A demographic and socio-medical history of the Aboriginal People of Victoria 1800-2000: reconstitutions and epidemiological analysis. We have produced a world-first historical demographic and epidemiological database that will be of continuing cultural and professional value to the Indigenous and research communities, and which can be copied to capture elusive mobile populations that are better identified genealogically than via conventional census methods. We will index and digitise the papers ....A demographic and socio-medical history of the Aboriginal People of Victoria 1800-2000: reconstitutions and epidemiological analysis. We have produced a world-first historical demographic and epidemiological database that will be of continuing cultural and professional value to the Indigenous and research communities, and which can be copied to capture elusive mobile populations that are better identified genealogically than via conventional census methods. We will index and digitise the papers of the late Dr Diane Barwick. Through this innovative study of past life courses we seek to understand the unique experience of 'fourth world' people in the health transition, and the deep historical forces structuring the persistent health problems of Indigenous Australians.Read moreRead less
Using national surveys to uncover and assess potentially harmful sexual practices in Southeast Asia. Studies in Southeast Asia have revealed a wide variety of sexual practices carrying risks to the reproductive health of women and men. This proposal builds on that base to design methods for population level analysis of behaviour and attitudes. It will address key hypotheses related to gender and the assessment of risk, harm and disadvantage. The Australian Aid program and national health departments will use the data on unhealthy practices for reproductive health programs. Major beneficiaries include individuals who will be guided away from unhealthy practices, and medical providers who will have more evidence to guide their practice.Read moreRead less
Circular Mobility in Australia: Types, Measures, Patterns and Impacts. The rapid growth of circular mobility (temporary overnight absences from home) for work and leisure reflects newly emerging spatial relationships that trigger massive flux in local populations. This project will: develop new measures that capture the unique dimensions of this movement (frequency, duration and seasonality); show how circulation in Australia varies over time and space; develop model profiles; quantify local impacts; and propose means to accurately estimate service populations. The results will have direct practical application to local authority planning, place the study of circulation on a rigorous analytical footing and enhance international understanding in a field largely neglected hitherto.Read moreRead less
Home and away?: Defining and conceptualising rural youth migration in Australia. The project addresses the Priority Goal of 'Strengthening Australia's social and economic health' in seeking a more precise understanding of the causes and actual migration pathways of Australian rural youth, and the extent to which these migrants return to their home regions. This understanding is critical for future key service delivery planning (e.g. health, including aged care), for labour force development plan ....Home and away?: Defining and conceptualising rural youth migration in Australia. The project addresses the Priority Goal of 'Strengthening Australia's social and economic health' in seeking a more precise understanding of the causes and actual migration pathways of Australian rural youth, and the extent to which these migrants return to their home regions. This understanding is critical for future key service delivery planning (e.g. health, including aged care), for labour force development planning (e.g. likely local demand for TAFE places). Relatedly, the project's findings should enable more reliable regional population projections and estimates and facilitate the development of locally-specific strategies to both retain rural youth and attract ex-migrants back.Read moreRead less
Beyond successful ageing: Longevity & healthy ageing among Australian women. This project has three key aims. First, to test and contrast two empirical models of successful ageing. Secondly, to compare these empirical models with women’s own perspectives of their ageing gained from prospective qualitative data. Thirdly, provide insights into women’s experience of very old age through interviews with women in their 90s. In addition to interview data, the project will analyse data from the 1921-2 ....Beyond successful ageing: Longevity & healthy ageing among Australian women. This project has three key aims. Secondly, to compare these empirical models with women’s own perspectives of their ageing gained from prospective qualitative data. Thirdly, provide insights into women’s experience of very old age through interviews with women in their 90s. In addition to interview data, the project will analyse data from the 1921-26 and 1946-51 cohorts of the Australian longitudinal study on women’s health. The expected outcomes will provide significant benefits, such as projecting potential health trajectories as women enter their later years.Read moreRead less

This research will enhance the knowledge base on Indigenous Australian fertility and provide a timely contribution to current debate about the social and economic consequences of low fertility and ageing. By engaging an early career researcher and an Indigenous research student, it will expand Australia's research capability on current and future Indigenous population dynamics in what has become a neglected area of research. It will ensure that full use is made of public expenditure on the collection of Indigenous social and demographic data. By extending linkages with researchers internationally, it will place Australia at the forefront of global efforts to understand Indigenous demographic transition.Read moreRead less

This project aims to address veteran suicide by conducting an historical and cultural analysis of the ways government, the military and the community have understood, governed, and serviced veterans from 1914-present. This project will generate new knowledge, moving beyond orthodox medical and cultural assessments to explore wider historical, cultural and sociological relations of veteran suicide, including civil military relations, and the influence of the veteran sector and families and community. The project will develop an innovative survey that will form the foundation of a longitudinal social health and wellbeing dataset on veterans, and contribute to policy and service provision to reduce veteran suicide and improve their wellbeing.Read moreRead less

This project will help to 'strengthen Australia's economic fabric' by improving our understanding of the effect of family benefit policies on fertility, saving and labour force participation. This is important because boosting fertility and labour force participation are both seen as ways of mitigating the economic burden of population ageing, thereby helping Australia to 'age well, age productively' in a national sense. Also, achieving a desired level of national saving is a medium term goal of government economic policy. Hence it is important to understand the interaction of saving, fertility and labour force participation in order to develop compatible and effective economic policies.Read moreRead less

This project explores the effects of, and responses to, one of the most catastrophic, yet least studied natural disasters of the 20th century. The project aims to analyse the extensive demographic, political, economic, and social impact of the 1923 Kantô Earthquake on Tokyo. It will also shed light on the politics which surrounded Tokyo's reconstruction, a reconstruction that influenced future expansion of Japan's capital throughout the 20th century. The findings, when published as a book and articles, will strengthen Japanese historiography, provide cross-cultural contextualisation and promote advances across various academic disciplines that investigate earthquakes, disaster relief, and urban reconstruction.Read moreRead less
