Australia has an international reputation for innovative and high impact research into the states, societies, and economies of Asia.
The Initiative will survey the volume, range, impact, and international status of Asian area research in Australia, identify themes with high potential for achieving significant outcomes through transnational research and research-training, and develop a strategy for maximizing national research capacity in targeted areas through a national inter-disciplinary network for Asia-area research - Network Asia.
Outcomes include a published report on the state of the field and a strategic plan for a viable and sustainable research network.

Expenditure needs and drawdown of retirement savings during later life: how important are demographic factors and financial resources? Projections of expenditure patterns in retirement which allow for population heterogeneity will provide individuals with a better appreciation of their income needs and their savings requirements for a comfortable retirement. It will also enable financial institutions to develop products which better target retirees' needs over the course of retirement, and in addition it will enable improved assessment of aspects of Government income support policy. Specifically, understanding the complex interactions between private and public pensions, and concession card receipt upon expenditure behaviour, will enable more accurate costings of the public support of elderly families as Australia's population ages. Circular Mobility in Australia: Types, Measures, Patterns and Impacts. The rapid growth of circular mobility (temporary overnight absences from home) for work and leisure reflects newly emerging spatial relationships that trigger massive flux in local populations. This project will: develop new measures that capture the unique dimensions of this movement (frequency, duration and seasonality); show how circulation in Australia varies over time and space; develop model profiles; quantify local imp ....Circular Mobility in Australia: Types, Measures, Patterns and Impacts. The rapid growth of circular mobility (temporary overnight absences from home) for work and leisure reflects newly emerging spatial relationships that trigger massive flux in local populations. This project will: develop new measures that capture the unique dimensions of this movement (frequency, duration and seasonality); show how circulation in Australia varies over time and space; develop model profiles; quantify local impacts; and propose means to accurately estimate service populations. The results will have direct practical application to local authority planning, place the study of circulation on a rigorous analytical footing and enhance international understanding in a field largely neglected hitherto.Read moreRead less
Cohabitation in Australia: Trends and Implications for Family Outcomes. The project will contribute to improvements in the economic and social well-being of Australian families and communities by increasing our understanding of changing pathways into relationships and the implications of these choices for later family outcomes. The national benefit from this will be realised in terms of more effective policies that promote relationship quality and stability. This will help reduce the social and ....Cohabitation in Australia: Trends and Implications for Family Outcomes. The project will contribute to improvements in the economic and social well-being of Australian families and communities by increasing our understanding of changing pathways into relationships and the implications of these choices for later family outcomes. The national benefit from this will be realised in terms of more effective policies that promote relationship quality and stability. This will help reduce the social and economic costs to the government and the community from poor relationship quality and relationship breakdown.Read moreRead less
An econometric analysis of the effects of family benefit policies on fertility, saving and labour force participation in Australia. This project will help to 'strengthen Australia's economic fabric' by improving our understanding of the effect of family benefit policies on fertility, saving and labour force participation. This is important because boosting fertility and labour force participation are both seen as ways of mitigating the economic burden of population ageing, thereby helping Australia to 'age well, age productively' in a national sense. Also, achieving a desired level of national saving is a medium term goal of government economic policy. Hence it is important to understand the interaction of saving, fertility and labour force participation in order to develop compatible and effective economic policies.Read moreRead less
Diggers to Veterans: risk, resilience and recovery. What really happened to the Diggers after the war? In this centenary year of Gallipoli, it is still not known. It is not known how long they lived nor how they compared in health and family formation to civilians. Did some recover from trauma and exposures over time? Did the Repatriation Scheme and medical care make a difference? What social and biological characteristics may have affected risk, resilience and recovery? And what can be learnt a ....Diggers to Veterans: risk, resilience and recovery. And what can be learnt about the lifelong impact of war exposures and traumas, to assist in the recovery of today's servicemen? This project aims to be the world's first cradle-to-grave medico-demographic study of survivors of military service in World War I, drawing on Australia's unique archive of service and veteran medical records.Read moreRead less
Islamic religiosity and challenge of political engagement and national belonging in multicultural western cities. This project will investigate how participation in Islamic religious practices strengthens attachments to the western cities where Muslims have chosen to live. It will contribute to global, national and local policy outcomes that focus on the challenges of accommodating minority religions in diverse western cities.
Improving Sub-national Population Forecasts. The aim of this project is to make significant advances in two related areas of regional, council area and local population forecasting, namely improving accuracy, and providing an indication of forecast uncertainty. Population forecasts often turn out to be far more inaccurate than users realise and fail to come with any information about reliability. Every year forecasts inform a wide variety of planning and policy development activities and influen ....Improving Sub-national Population Forecasts. The aim of this project is to make significant advances in two related areas of regional, council area and local population forecasting, namely improving accuracy, and providing an indication of forecast uncertainty. Population forecasts often turn out to be far more inaccurate than users realise and fail to come with any information about reliability. Every year forecasts inform a wide variety of planning and policy development activities and influence investment decisions worth billions of dollars. In order to increase the value of forecasts to users, this project aims to combine methods from a range of disciplines to devise more accurate ways of forecasting populations, and provide accompanying information on their likely error.Read moreRead less
Comparing internal migration in countries around the world: measures, theories and policy dimensions. Internal migration shapes settlement patterns, adjusts labour markets and enables people to pursue opportunities, but little is known about how and why mobility varies so widely between countries around the world. This project will make rigorous cross-national comparisons, explain the differences and help refine policies that affect mobility.
Heteronuclear parallel imaging and spectroscopy for magnetic resonance. This project will develop novel imaging technology for improved interrogation of biological processes in living tissue. Successful outcomes of this project are expected to contribute significantly to biomedical research efforts, such as improved early detection and treatment of cancer and chronic disease.
