A framework for adapting child interview protocols in complex cases. This project aims to develop–in collaboration with Aboriginal and other industry co-researchers–a ‘how to’ framework for effectively adapting standard child abuse interview protocols to accommodate the complexities that create barriers to disclosure. Complex cases necessitate interview adaption, but it requires systematic guidance and an interdisciplinary, practitioner-driven approach to be effective. This innovative framework is expected to have long-term benefits for services that support children’s well-being, through improvements in the quality of evidence underpinning decisions. By enhancing interviewer capability, there will also be fewer cases prematurely exiting the justice system before forensic interview or investigation.Read moreRead less

How fast is the Universe expanding? This project aims to produce the most precise measurement to date of the present day expansion rate of the Universe using gravitational waves and thus resolve current tensions plaguing existing measurements. We plan to develop the most comprehensive catalogue of gravitational waves and their hosts using the largest galaxy surveys in the world and use innovative statistical techniques to extract cosmological measurements from them. Expected outcomes include new knowledge of what the Universe is made of and how it has evolved, and enhanced international collaboration between Australia and other survey member countries. Anticipated benefits include new software and methods for the analysis of big data.Read moreRead less

Illuminating the dark universe. This project aims to measure and explain the dark side of the universe, by performing new theoretical analyses of two groundbreaking surveys. Dark energy and dark matter are amongst the most profound puzzles facing fundamental physics. The Dark Energy Survey expects to discover approximately 3000 supernovae, and using The Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument will measure distances to 30 million galaxies. This project will combine these findings to determine whether dark energy changes with time, narrow the search for a quantum theory of gravity, and complete the standard model of particle physics by measuring the mass of the neutrino, a subatomic particle. This will substantially advance our understanding of the physics of our Universe, inspiring the next generation of innovators.Read moreRead less

Time is among the most precisely measurable quantities in physics, yet it is also the least understood concept in physics. This project aims to develop a mathematical framework describing measurements of time with high-precision clocks sensitive to both quantum and gravitational effects. The project expects to deliver new knowledge in the foundations of quantum physics by describing new gravitational effects in quantum systems. Expected outcomes include enhanced understanding of time in quantum theory and strategies for harnessing gravitational effects in high-precision clocks, bringing cultural benefits to society and paving the way towards improved quantum technologies that are expected to bring economic benefits in the next two decades. Innovation in police gender equity management: Looking back, moving forward. This project aims to investigate gender equity recruitment and career support policies in all nine Australian and New Zealand policing agencies. A wide range of equity initiatives that have been implemented across police agencies will be examined, along with affirmative action measures including recent 50/50 male/female recruitment targets. This project aims to investigate gender equity recruitment and career support policies in all nine Australian and New Zealand policing agencies. A wide range of equity initiatives that have been implemented across police agencies will be examined, along with affirmative action measures including recent 50/50 male/female recruitment targets. The project expects to generate an advanced best practice model that can be used by domestic and international police agencies. This will allow police organisations to better manage equity issues and support a more inclusive and representative workforce. The benefits of this project are significant, they range from stronger police-community relations through to better service delivery by police.Read moreRead less

The mission of our Centre is to use gravitational waves to investigate the fundamental nature of relativistic gravity, ultra-dense matter, and cosmology. This will generate critical discoveries that cement Australia's leadership role in the gravitational wave mega-science instruments of the 2030s and 2040s. By bringing together a world-class team with broad and complementary expertise we will develop core technologies for future detectors, discover new sources of gravitational waves, probe fundamental physics, and lay the foundations for an Australian gravitational wave observatory. Our discoveries will inspire Australia's youth to pursue high tech careers and position our staff and students to become leaders in both industry and academia.Read moreRead less
Design guidelines for safety-critical controllers in high-risk environments. This project aims to generate novel product design guidelines for developing safer controllers for use by potentially stressed individuals in high-risk situations. It will do this by generating specific insights and verifying generalisable solutions from the context of total artificial heart recipients –who must engage with critical controllers constantly. This project aims to generate novel product design guidelines for developing safer controllers for use by potentially stressed individuals in high-risk situations. It will do this by generating specific insights and verifying generalisable solutions from the context of total artificial heart recipients –who must engage with critical controllers constantly. This project expects to generate new knowledge in design by establishing a new research topic around an under-examined user cohort. Expected outcomes of this project include interaction design theory developments and improved controller design techniques. This should provide significant benefits and competitive advantages by lowering stress and improving safety across a range of contexts.Read moreRead less
Improving the Policing of Gender Violence in the Global South. Violence against women is twice the global average in Pacific Island Communities, yet most approaches about how to police it have come from the Global North. This project addresses this mismatch by discovering new ways to improve the policing of gender violence by testing unique models of women led policing. Expected outcomes include new evidence to improve the policing of gender violence, enhance victim's experiences, and to reform ....Improving the Policing of Gender Violence in the Global South. This project addresses this mismatch by discovering new ways to improve the policing of gender violence by testing unique models of women led policing. Expected outcomes include new evidence to improve the policing of gender violence, enhance victim's experiences, and to reform laws. Expected benefits include better outcomes for victims, improved policing practices and reductions in gender violence. The project will foster increased engagement, knowledge transfer and partnership between Australia and Pacific Island Communities in line with Australian Government strategic priorities.Read moreRead less

This project aims to build a comprehensive organisational model of police workplace health and performance. This project answers the call for immediate organisational reform of police workplaces resulting from an Australian national study (2018) and Australian Senate Inquiry (2019). Police experience harm that must be addressed through organisational improvements, leading to more efficient policing. In the first study of its kind, this project will develop a practical early warning system that promotes strategic and front-line leadership capability of Australian police agencies in workplace health and performance. It will allow better identification of risk, resource allocation and tracking of these critical issues in policing.Read moreRead less
