Integrating architectural, mathematical and computing knowledge to capture the dynamics of air in design. This research will bring together architectural, mathematical and computing knowledge to discover effective ways to design buildings and cities that are more responsive to the complex dynamics of air movement and temperature. This knowledge will lead to reduced energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions, increased comfort and more usable public space.

Australia has an international reputation for innovative and high impact research into the states, societies, and economies of Asia.
The Initiative will survey the volume, range, impact, and international status of Asian area research in Australia, identify themes with high potential for achieving significant outcomes through transnational research and research-training, and develop a strategy for maximizing national research capacity in targeted areas through a national inter-disciplinary network for Asia-area research - Network Asia.
Outcomes include a published report on the state of the field and a strategic plan for a viable and sustainable research network.

Wild Man from Borneo: species, race, representation. This project addresses the representation of species boundaries in Western accounts of the orangutan in the 19th and 20th centuries. This project addresses the representation of species boundaries in Western accounts of the orangutan in the 19th and 20th centuries. Darwinian theory raised the possibility that animals could ?evolve?. Orangutans seemed ?closest? to humans and therefore raised key questions about the border between humans and animals. These questions were addressed in a vast range of scientific, popular, imaginative and juvenile literature. Even when ecological models of the environment shifted attention from evolutionary potential to ecological role, orangutans retained a special status as ?sentinel? species. This project will produce a monograph examining the construction, maintenance and erosion of ideas of species boundaries.Read moreRead less

This project aims to transform senior schooling to support students with limited levels of educational achievement secure productive transitions to lives beyond school. Starting with understanding what productive transitions means for past-students, the project engages with current students, teachers, school leaders, community organisations and employers to develop, trial and evaluate effective senior school experiences for those young adults. The researchers will work collaboratively with four school communities and local employers. Through engagements with students, workplaces and community settings outside of schools, the project will identify, promote and support achieving productive post-school transitions for these students.Read moreRead less

The arts play a crucial role in the cultural, social and economic fabric of Australian society. However, the pedagogies that develop creative thought and practice within and/or across domains of arts activity are not well understood. This project will provide significant national benefit through the identification of learning and teaching practices, dispositions and environments that foster creativity and innovation in music. The project findings will provide new knowledge concerning eminence approaches to pedagogy in music, inform the development of creativity and innovation in domains of arts practice, and contribute to the further development of Australia's cultural communityRead moreRead less

The project seeks to understand the internal pressure in a building during windstorms, to improve safety and performance. The internal pressure in a building is dependent on its volume and flexibility and the sizes of openings in the building envelope, and is a critical loading parameter in building design. Windstorm damage investigations have shown that incorrect internal pressures are frequently used in building design, leading to damage. This project aims to study the internal pressures generated in buildings with a range of volumes and openings in the envelope. A combination of model-scale and full-scale tests and theoretical analysis are planned to determine critical parameters for highly turbulent air-flow though openings. Results will inform the revision of design data in codes and of guidelines for consistent, optimal design of buildings.Read moreRead less
Popular music and cultural memory: Localised popular music histories and their significance for national music industries. This project provides a public space for audience members in local communities in Australia, Israel, the Netherlands, UK and USA to share their memories of local popular music heritage. By privileging these voices, the project has the potential to develop and strengthen community cohesion and also raise questions of how these voices might be incorporated into the production and distribution practices of Australia's music industry. Our findings will feed into current debates about the importance of local histories in a national context and point to possible economic benefits through cultural tourism and leisure outlets, for example, community-based exhibitions and guided tours focusing on local popular music history and heritage.Read moreRead less

Modern Australian law is very heavily based on legislation, and the amount and complexity of legislation increases every year, particularly delegated legislation. It is essential that legislation be interpreted and applied accurately and efficiently for Australia to have high quality legal research, for the operation of the rule of law, and for the effective operation of the legal system. This project will contribute to all of these national benefits by providing free access for all Australian legal researchers and lawyers to a comprehensive national collection of legislation which meets international best practice standards, includes delegated legislation, and integrates all legislation-related materials.Read moreRead less

Diversity in the Australian community has been recognised as a valuable national asset. This project will provide insight into how classrooms can be formed to value diversity among students and provide learning opportunities for all students whatever their background or needs. Students' experiences within schools provide them with a blueprint of the way communities operate, particularly in terms of how inclusion and exclusion are decided, how conflicts are dealt with, and how consensus between members of a group can be built. This project will help clarify how inclusive communities for students and teachers are formed and managed over time. Read moreRead less
