Recreating Public Space: Poetics in the Production of Public Space. Community health and environmental sustainability are two national goals. 'Recreating Place' proposes that they are interlinked. First, it focuses on the neglected cultural heritage of local communities. Second, it investigates a graphic technique for translating these collective traces and associations into the design of the place. Community health and environmental sustainability are two national goals. 'Recreating Place' proposes that they are interlinked. First, it focuses on the neglected cultural heritage of local communities. Second, it investigates a graphic technique for translating these collective traces and associations into the design of the place. Developing a creative research model, 'Recreating Place' acts locally but thinks globally. Showing that the well-being that springs from poetic repossession of the place through its stories provides the collective motivation to ensure that place's environmental sustainability, it demonstrates how national goals can be met through the poetic re-enchantment of particular locales.Read moreRead less
Integrating architectural, mathematical and computing knowledge to capture the dynamics of air in design. This research will bring together architectural, mathematical and computing knowledge to discover effective ways to design buildings and cities that are more responsive to the complex dynamics of air movement and temperature. This knowledge will lead to reduced energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions, increased comfort and more usable public space.
Fringe to Famous: Contemporary Australian Culture as an Innovation System. The project examines the crossover between ‘alternative’ and ‘mainstream’ cultural production in Australia, identifying ways in which a hybridisation between the avant garde and the popular promotes the development of cultural industries. It will conduct a detailed study of five cases: comedy (Working Dog and the Chaser), music (Mental as Anything, Paul Kelly and Nick Cave), visual arts/graphic design (Mambo Graphics), sh ....Fringe to Famous: Contemporary Australian Culture as an Innovation System. It will conduct a detailed study of five cases: comedy (Working Dog and the Chaser), music (Mental as Anything, Paul Kelly and Nick Cave), visual arts/graphic design (Mambo Graphics), short film (Tropfest) and games development (Freeplay). It will identify the conditions which have allowed crossover between the avant-garde and the mainstream and produce recommendations for policy both in cultural development and the development of creative industries.Read moreRead less

Digital fabrication technologies: analysing patterns of adoption and innovative transformations in architectural design and practice. This project on adoption of digital fabrication technologies by Australian architecture practices will reveal emerging opportunities for creative design and associated transformations in the design practices. These outcomes will enable the increasingly globalising sector of architectural design services to become more agile and innovative.
Prefabricated reusable building modules: reducing building life cycle environmental impacts. The outcomes of this project will enhance Australia's ability to provide globally competitive next generation building construction solutions. It will also help to not only ensure that Australian industry is at the forefront of best-practice environmental innovation but also support industry to develop and expand export markets, providing significant economic benefits. The outcomes of this project will be valuable to the construction industry to make implementation of ecologically sustainable design more rigorous. Strategies for improving the environmental performance of construction, particularly through prefabrication of durable building components will be able to be better facilitated by the research undertaken in this project.Read moreRead less
The role of location on the effectiveness of smoke alarms. Smoke alarms in buildings are required by the Building Code of Australia (BCA), but the current requirements are less than optimal. This project will provide the basis for optimisation of smoke alarms and the number, interconnection and positioning of smoke alarms in residential buildings. This is expected to lead to reductions in fire fatalities, injuries and property loss.
Soviet War Experiences, 1937-1950. This project aims to write a history of Soviet war experiences and chart the varieties of wartime experiences on Soviet held territories between the outbreak of the Second World War in Asia in 1937 and the end of the counter-insurgency in the western borderlands by 1950. Rather than extract one, allegedly 'typical' experience, this project aims to focus on the range, variety, and complexity of wartime experiences of ordinary (and some extraordinary) people livi ....Soviet War Experiences, 1937-1950. Rather than extract one, allegedly 'typical' experience, this project aims to focus on the range, variety, and complexity of wartime experiences of ordinary (and some extraordinary) people living, fighting, surviving, dying, or passing through the lands controlled, sometimes more, sometimes less, by Stalin and his political apparatus during the years of war in the 1930s and 1940s.Read moreRead less
