Chronic Disease Epidemiology In Different Populations: Risk Factors, Detection And Prevention
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$621,458.00
Summary
To investigate causes, detection and prevention of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and kidney disease in Aboriginal and international populations, I will maintain a long-term cohort with a 20-year follow-up in Aboriginal people and to analyse several large repeated cross-sectional data collected over 25 years in China. For the next 5 years, I will continue to to provide critical epidemiological evidence for the development of health policies and clinical guidelines related to chronic diseases ....To investigate causes, detection and prevention of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and kidney disease in Aboriginal and international populations, I will maintain a long-term cohort with a 20-year follow-up in Aboriginal people and to analyse several large repeated cross-sectional data collected over 25 years in China. We have entered an era where it is now possible to sequence an individual's genetic blueprint. In the case of cancer this can be used to determine the genetic damage that has occurred in cancer cells. This fellowship seeks to carry out large scale sequencing of cancer patient and map out the genetic damage that is common to get a handle on what drives the disease. It will also investigate how personalized mutation detection might improve cancer treatment selection for individual patients.
Defining Genomic Mechanisms Associated With Treatment Response, Drug Resistance And Early Blast Crisis In Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$631,370.00
Summary
Chronic myeloid leukaemia is a fatal disease if untreated. Most patients now survive with new drugs, but some still rapidly die. I aim to understand these differences by investigating the genetic makeup of patients at diagnosis. Some may have gene mutations that prevent drugs from working effectively. Mutations will be detected using technology that can search more than 30,000 genes at the same time. This work could lead to improved survival for more patients by finding new targets for therapy.
The Australian Health Inequalities Research Program (AHIRP)
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$601,484.00
Summary
This research proposal focuses on the monitoring and surveillance of health inequalities in Australia, the measurement and collection of socioeconomic data, improving our knowledge and understanding of health inequalities, investigating policies and interventions to reduce health inequalities, and strengthening Australia’s research capacity and infrastructure as these relate to health inequalities.
I am a biochemical geneticist working on inherited disorders that affect the musculoskeletal system. My major focus is determining the molecular basis of muscular dystrophies and bone and cartilage disorders.
Epidemiological Investigation Of The Role Of Early Life Environment In The Development Of Immune Function And Allergic And Autoimmune Disease: Knowledge Generation For Future Primary Prevention.
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$664,584.00
Summary
Immune diseases, which include allergic and autoimmune diseases, are accounting for an increasing fraction of the disease burden in Australia. It is now increasingly recognised that early life changes to the immune system by environmental factors can impact on the risk of these diseases. The goal of this fellowship is the prevention of allergic and autoimmune disease.
My work focuses on the prevention of vascular disease. A major aim of mine is to improve outcome after stroke. We can test this by assessing whether individualised management plans provided to people with stroke will improve risk factors. Proper risk factor management reduces the risk of stroke recurrence. I also aim to reduce the burden of vascular disease in disadvantaged settings by finding out what risk factors are important in the development of these diseases in people living in poverty.
Through the improved understanding of the determinants of road injury, the identification of effective and efficient preventive strategies and how best to translate the research findings, this Fellowship will facilitate reductions in the burden of road injury in Australia.
The identification, prevention and management of chronic disease risk factors and understanding impact on clinical outcomes is fundamental to improving health and well-being. The program of work encapsulated in this application utilises a number of research methods to advance our understanding and provide new directions for cardiovascular disease prevention and management.
Research Fellowship In Preventing HIV And HIV-related Cancer
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$772,490.00
Summary
This fellowship concerns HIV prevention and HIV-related cancer. In HIV prevention, Grulich will evaluate the success of elements of the new biomedical prevention approach to HIV, and highlight areas in which policy action can be taken to substantially reduce HIV transmission. In HIV related cancer, Grulich will determine whether HIV-associated cancers continue to occur at increased rates in the new era of prolonged survival of people with HIV, and investigate preventive approaches.
