It is expected to be the first study globally to use linked data to develop multi-system informed offending trajectories of violent offenders in these settings, examine the impact of patrons bans on offending trajectories, and apply situational action theory to alcohol-related violence. Results are expected to inform a critical knowledge gap and assist in the development of targeted violence preventive responses which reduce harm and make communities safer.Read moreRead less

Safe public spaces are the cornerstone of liveable cities. Everyday users of public spaces are vital crime prevention guardians because they are frequently present in the absence of formal regulators like police. This project will investigate factors that enhance active guardianship and facilitate crime prevention in public spaces. It aims to generate new knowledge on the extent to which everyday users of public spaces develop a sense of territorial control leading to conscious monitoring of public spaces and intervention in social problems. The project aims to inform crime prevention strategies that facilitate active guardianship leading to less crime, reduced fear of crime and enhanced opportunities for pro-social use of public spaces. This project aims to investigate the prevention of terrorism. It will examine approaches that involve police community engagement and local responses to violent extremism. This is a significant issue given communities are a key line of defence against terrorism. Expecting to generate new knowledge about counter-terrorism by examining policies adopted in Australia and abroad, the project will identify models of best practice for the prevention of terrorism, ascertaining how community partnerships against terrorism can be improved. This will provide significant benefits by assisting police, government agencies, community groups and local service providers to implement and evaluate strategies that prevent terrorism.Read moreRead less
Targeting early contact with the criminal justice system in young people. Understanding and Costing Offending Trajectories: Creating an Evidence-Base for Targeting Crime Prevention. The research will provide an evidence-base for targeting diversionary and crime prevention programs and for assessing their cost-effectiveness. By providing a better understanding of offending pathways, the research will enable programs to be targeted towards particul ....Understanding and Costing Offending Trajectories: Creating an Evidence-Base for Targeting Crime Prevention. The research will provide an evidence-base for targeting diversionary and crime prevention programs and for assessing their cost-effectiveness. Many of these programs have resulted in a range of beneficial outcomes and they are receiving increased government funding. By providing a better understanding of offending pathways, the research will enable programs to be targeted towards particular at-risk groups at crucial developmental phases. The innovative longitudinal costing method that will be developed and applied in the Queensland context will enable an assessment of the cost-effectiveness of diversionary and crime prevention programs. This will provide a sound empirical basis for directing scarce government resources.Read moreRead less

Intimate partner homicide is a serious public health and safety issue. This project will have several benefits. The findings will extend understanding of pathways leading to partner homicide. The findings will contribute to improved decision-making models by police and social welfare agencies. With more valid information about the changing characteristics leading to partner homicide, the findings will foster more effective and efficient responses. Additionally, the findings will inform victims of partner violence of risks related to escalation toward fatal outcomes and should facilitate help seeking behaviour. Collectively, project findings should expand understanding, improve service delivery and save lives.

Understanding the emerging threat of conspiracy-fuelled extremism. This project aims to address the emerging threat of conspiracy-fuelled extremism in Australia. This project aims to address the emerging threat of conspiracy-fuelled extremism in Australia. The project expects to produce new knowledge by identifying the unique factors driving this new form of extremism and the social harm it causes. Through three studies, the project will test a new theoretical model of conspiracy-fuelled extremism, will explore the threats and social harms this form of extremism creates, and will develop evidence-based insights into how it can be mitigated. The research should produce benefits for Australia by providing policymakers with a risk-assessment tool to identify individuals most 'at-risk' of violent extremism, and by providing knowledge about the services families may require to de-radicalise loved ones.Read moreRead less

The protection of whistleblowers and other internal witnesses to corruption, misconduct and maladministration is a great unsolved problem in public sector governance. Involving 11 integrity institutions, this first national study of internal witness management will describe and compare organisational experience under varying public interest disclosure regimes across the Australian public sector. By identifying and promoting current best practice in workplace responses to public interest whistleblowing, the project will use the experience and perceptions of internal witnesses and first- and second-level managers to identify more routine strategies for preventing, reducing and addressing reprisals and other whistleblowing-related conflicts.Read moreRead less
DNA FINGERPRINTING IN DOCUMENT SECURITY TO COUNTER TERRORISM. Crime costs Australia >$18 billion per year. Alternatively identification by DNA fingerprinting is highly specific (>10 billion to 1) and can now be obtained from cells embedded within paper. This project will use these techniques to provide definitive document validity and authenticity to minimise document fraud and thus counter illicit finance and terrorist funding.

This project aims to investigate, for the first time, the experiential motivations of child sexual abuse perpetrators. Using a novel theoretical and methodological approach, it expects to discover new knowledge about the motivations of child sexual abuse perpetrators. Expected outcomes include new theoretical explanations for child sexual abuse perpetration and transformed policy and practice measures to prevent and respond to child sexual abuse in Australia and beyond. This should provide significant benefits, such as reduction of the widespread, severe and costly impacts of child sexual abuse, and an evidence base to support and enhance government initiatives such as the National Strategy to Prevent and Respond to Child Sexual Abuse.
