Funding Amount
$427,271.00
Summary
Regulation of gene expression is implicated in all disease processes. Aberrant gene expression is particularly associated with tumour formation. In this project we determine the relationship between an oncogene MOZ and another oncogene BMI1. Together these proteins regulate one of the most important systems controlling gene expression at the level of chromatin structure.
The Molecular And Biological Roles Of Growth Inhibiting Chromatin Binding Proteins

National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$814,843.00
Summary
Our previous work has led to the identification of mutations underlying human birth defects. Similarly, our proposed work will identify a new gene as potentially mutated in human heart defects. We will determine its overlapping functions with a related gene and elucidate their roles in embryonic development and cancer.
Tissue-dependent Proregenerative Mechanisms In Adult Vertebrates
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$638,742.00
Summary
This proposal addresses how immune cells participate in regeneration of damaged organs in adult zebrafish. Unlike mammals, zebrafish have a remarkable capacity to regenerate their various body parts in adulthood, providing a model to understand how regeneration capacity might be induced in humans. The proposed study will define mechanisms of immune-mediated regeneration that could provide new cellular and molecular targets for stimulating replacement of damaged organs in the human injury setting
Role Of Snail Family Proteins In Male Fertility And Testicular Cancer

National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$586,076.00
Summary
Male fertility requires production of healthy sperm in the testis. This project builds on our discoveries that testicular cells regulate gene activity via the Snail family of proteins during sperm development, and that interruption of their activities reduces fertility in mice and fruitflies. Snail proteins are also active in cancer cells. We propose to study the precise steps in sperm production affected by Snail proteins and how they affect the progression of testicular cancer.
Modelling Laminin Mediated Adhesion And Congenital Muscular Dystrophy In Zebrafish

National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$586,076.00
Summary
Congenital Muscular Dystrophy (CMD) is a muscle wasting conditions arising from mutations in the Lamina alpha 2 gene (lama2) gene. We have established zebrafish as a model system in which to determine the mechanistic basis of CMD pathology. We have isolated mutations in the zebrafish Lama2 gene and have determined that Lama2-deficient zebrafish accurately model the human condition. We aim to use the advantages of the zebrafish system to model treatments for muscular dystrophy
Neurobiology Of Childhood Speech Disorders: Improving Detection, Diagnosis And Clinical Care
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$994,575.00
Summary
One in 20 children have a speech disorder at school entry, with lifelong deficits in psychosocial, academic and employment outcomes. Little is known about the aetiology of speech disorders, preventing targeted care. We combine expertise in speech pathology, gene discovery and brain imaging, to advance knowledge on gene and brain contributions to speech disorder. We will have direct impacts on clinical care including detection, diagnosis and counselling, optimising outcomes for affected children.
Role Of The LIM-only Protein LMO4 In Lung Development And Lung Cancer
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$490,395.00
Summary
Lung cancer is the leading cause of death in cancer patients in Australia. Although treatments have improved in the past 10 years, new therapeutic strategies are eagerly awaited. Deregulation of molecules driving development of normal tissue is often observed in cancer. Our aim is to identify key regulators of lung development and lung repair after injury. We aim to evaluate the role of these molecules in the initiation and progression of lung cancer to identify new targets for therapies.
Evaluation And Design Of Therapeutic Strategies Utilizing Zebrafish Genetic Models Of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$632,438.00
Summary
Duchenne and Becker Muscular Dystrophy (MD) are allelic muscle wasting conditions arising from mutations in the dystrophin (DMD) gene. We have established zebrafish as a model system in which to determine the mechanistic basis of DMD pathology. We have isolated mutations in the zebrafish dystrophin gene and have determined that Dystrophin-deficient zebrafish accurately model the human condition. We aim to use the advantages of the zebrafish system to model treatments for muscular dystrophy.
Redefining Proprioceptive Circuitry At A Molecular Level
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$564,482.00
Summary
Neurons form an extensive series of connections to relay information across the entire body. It is essential to understand how neurons know to find their way, and form the right connections, in a developing animal. This project will investigate the genes which control formation of neural circuits that are essential for correct movement.
Understanding How A Compromised Fetal Environment Reduces Nephron Endowment
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$736,901.00
Summary
The Grant will investigate how maternal diabetes and low protein diet affects the normal development of the fetal kidney with a focus on understanding how the number of nephrons in the organ are determined.
