Understanding and preventing gun violence: A qualitative study. Gun violence causes significant harm across Australian communities. Excluding sexual assault, firearms feature in nearly one in 10 violent crimes. The annual costs of gun violence run into tens of millions of dollars. This project aims to make an original qualitative contribution to understanding and preventing gun violence in three contexts: drug dealing/trafficking, other organised crime activity, and armed robbery. Summary
Heart disease is more frequent and occurs at an earlier age in men than women. The reason is unknown. Apart from obesity and associated disturbances of metabolism, changes in sex hormones such as testosterone, together with the effects of inflammation may be important, and may in turn be affected by environment, lifestyle behaviours, and stress. To untangle these relationships, we will use cutting edge technology, in a large sample of men, in partnership with other international scientists.
ARC/NHMRC Research Network for Parasitology. The ARC Network for Parasitology will focus and coordinate Australia's world class fundamental, strategic and applied parasitology research. This targeted approach will raise Australia's standing in the field, assist in the community's understanding of parasitology and biosecurity and maintain and improve Australia's capacity for keeping its stock, crops, wildlife and people disease-free.
