Summary
Pregnancy associated diabetes is a significant complication of pregnancy that has adverse health effects for both mother and baby. We have developed a multivariate algorithm to identify women during their first trimester of pregnancy who will subsequently develop gestational diabetes. The test requires further clinical validation to develop a commercial product and to implement it into clinical practice.

Summary
Precision oncology, the treatment of cancer patients selected with a particular molecular characteristic (biomarker) matched to a therapy, has transformed the treatment of cancer patients. However, many biomarkers used for clinical care are not reliable and do not perform their role. I will translate new research tests from fundamental discovery, clinical trials and the development of novel diagnostics using innovative high throughput laboratory technologies to enhance patient outcomes.
Cardio-oncology is dedicated to preventing and treating cardiovascular issues in cancer patients. We aim to establish the first Australian perspective on this emerging field. We will assess the role of biomarkers in detecting cardiotoxicity from cancer therapy so patients can be safely guided through their cancer treatment. Finally, we will investigate if advanced cardiac imaging can detect cardiotoxicity earlier so patients can have optimal cancer therapy whilst preserving cardiac function.

Summary
A droplet of blood contains information whether a person has cancer, the stage of the cancer and how their response to treatment. The proposed research will employ ultrasensitive detection technologies to analyse so-called biomarkers released from cancer cells. We will use lab-based models of cancer, generated with a 3D bioprinter, to learn what biomarkers tell us about cancer type and response to drugs. This knowledge is urgently needed for early cancer detection and better cancer treatment.

Summary
Current bowel cancer screening tests require people to collect a stool sample. While able to be done at home, this creates certain inconveniences and has other barriers to its use including being distasteful to some. Also, even though stool tests are useful they are not as accurate as we would like. We have discovered a molecule in the blood of patients with bowel cancer that could, if configured as a screening test, serve to be of even greater accuracy and also be more acceptable to people.

We aim to convert novel scientific findings to better treating patients with end-stage heart disease. A secondary aim is to train clinicians with a better understanding of sophisticated scientific approaches so they can better transfer this knowledge to health practices and policies. We will study new ways of identifying patients who are likely to suffer from heart attacks as well as those with heart problems who appear to function well but in fact have poor health and life outlook.

Summary
When selecting cancer therapy we take into account ‘biomarkers’, biological cancer characteristics that predict treatment success. We will work with an international group, the Advanced Colorectal Cancer Database, to analyse individual patient clinical trial data. We intend to validate biomarkers used to select treatment with cetuximab or panitumumab. Cancer genes called KRAS, NRAS, PTEN, PIK3CA, EREG and BRAF will be examined. Our study will provide best evidence for personalised treatment.

A blood-based test for bowel cancer and the premalignant lesion (i.e. adenomas) has potential to improve several aspects of screening for bowel cancer – improved capacity to detect lesions in well people who do not suspect their presence, avoidance of faecal sampling and fewer false-positive results. There is no reliable simple screening test for adenomas. This study aims at developing a practical blood test based on a device that filters and enriches cells from blood that carry these markers
