Engaging Augmented Reality on 3D Head Up Displays to Reduce Risky Driving. This project aims to reduce risky driving behaviours through novel augmented reality applications for three-dimensional head-up displays, making safe driving more engaging so that drivers will take less risk. Over 1 million people are killed and 50 million are seriously injured on roads each year worldwide. Risky driving behaviours (speeding and distracted driving) are major causes. Over 1 million people are killed and 50 million are seriously injured on roads each year worldwide. Risky driving behaviours (speeding and distracted driving) are major causes. This project intends to produce novel in-car interaction design implementations, provide important visual design guidelines for future display technologies, and provide novel road safety interventions.Read moreRead less

Risky Gadgets to the Rescue: Designing Personal Ubicomp Devices to Foster Safer Driving Behaviours in Young Males. Young males are over-represented in road crashes. Part of the problem is their proneness to boredom, a hardwired personality factor that can lead to risky driving or distractions. This project aims to design innovative ubiquitous computing technologies that make safe driving more stimulating and pleasurable. This research will inform the future design of personal ubiquitous devices ....Risky Gadgets to the Rescue: Designing Personal Ubicomp Devices to Foster Safer Driving Behaviours in Young Males. Young males are over-represented in road crashes. Part of the problem is their proneness to boredom, a hardwired personality factor that can lead to risky driving or distractions. This project aims to design innovative ubiquitous computing technologies that make safe driving more stimulating and pleasurable. This research will inform the future design of personal ubiquitous devices that pose a threat to road safety, by replacing the stimuli from risky driving with safer stimuli and simulating risk to increase risk perception when it is actually not present. This project aims to reduce risky driving behaviours, and, in the process, advance our knowledge about the role of boredom in the road safety context.Read moreRead less
Disability and Digital Technology: Accessible Design, Global Media Policy, and Human Rights. Disability is a major area of Australian reform, and digital technology is key to securing historic goals of full social participation. Disability is a major area of Australian reform, and digital technology is key to securing historic goals of full social participation. This project offers the first comprehensive investigation of how we invent, design, implement, and regulate technology for people with disabilities. It will provide a theory of disability and technology, with case studies including mobiles, e-readers, and health technologies. The project will examine human rights aspects of technology in the United Nations disability convention, and their relation to global media policy. The project will propose better ways to align human rights frameworks, policy, and technology design to ensure digital participation for Australians with disability.Read moreRead less
Public Wi-Fi as Urban Infrastructure - the Australian Case. This research positions publicly provided Wi-Fi as a type of urban and civic infrastructure and asks whether there is a sound case for public investment in public Wi-Fi by local governments. Australia lags behind much of the world in providing public wireless internet access, but a surge of investment is closing the gap. This research positions publicly provided Wi-Fi as a type of urban and civic infrastructure and asks whether there is a sound case for public investment in public Wi-Fi by local governments. Australia lags behind much of the world in providing public wireless internet access, but a surge of investment is closing the gap. This field-based research aims to appraise rationales for public Wi-Fi provision by examining the social, economic and civic impacts of network use. This project aims to fill major empirical and knowledge gaps about investment rationales, uses, and impacts of public Wi-Fi networks, and inform development of urban and communications policies.Read moreRead less
Moving media: mobile internet and new policy modes. Moving Media' is a comprehensive study of Australian mobile internet, how the infrastructures are evolving, how people use these convergent technologies, and how traditional and new modes of media policy respond. The project will advance our understanding of this vital area of future media, providing evidence to inform better policy and regulation.
5G and the Future of Public Telecommunications. This project aims to examine the rollout of 5G and assess the implications of this emerging technology for public telecommunications from the perspective of multiple stakeholders (including emergency services). 5G will radically transform the role and function of the telecommunications sector, and this project will examine the evolution of public telecommunications as part of this larger transformation. It will provide an evidence base for stakeholders and chart a new role for public telecommunications during a period of structural change. It will also help scholars reconceptualise core tenets of public telecommunications policy. Benefits include the more efficient use of public resources in the telecommunications sector.Read moreRead less

Radiofrequency spectrum is the critical input that enables wireless communication. Existing spectrum management tools were constructed to deal with scarcity. This project aims to reconceptualise spectrum management as technological developments reduce scarcity. In four overlapping stages, an international research team aims to investigate the regulatory implications of emerging technologies that share spectrum; conduct fifteen case studies of spectrum 'refarming' around the world over the last two decades, including secondary trading, public reallocations and renewals; explore models for dynamic integration of spectrum sharing and refarming; and publish an accessible intellectual history of a unique resource.Read moreRead less
The Game of Being Mobile: A study of mobile gaming cultures. This is the first Australian study to examine the social uses of mobile gaming. Smartphones have put location-based and social media games in the hands of mobile users worldwide. Through ethnographic methods, this study will explore how mobile game consumption is reflecting, and being shaped by, complex social and technological practices integral to contemporary life.
Spreading fictions: distributing stories in the online age. As the first systematic, large scale, public analysis of audiovisual distribution in Australia, Spreading Fictions will greatly improve understanding of a vital area for Australia's economic and cultural future. The high priority governments give to policies encouraging local audiovisual productions reflects a belief in their cultural resonance at home and abroad and the economic significance of creative work. This project will help to maximise the effectiveness of those policies. As digital TV switchover proceeds and the National Broadband Network is built, data about how Australians are using more powerful, functional mobile devices and faster, cheaper fixed line access will be critical.Read moreRead less
