High capacity wire-line internet access (~ 1 Mbit/s) is available through existing telephone lines or through the cable TV infrastructure. The need to have the same quality wireless and mobile internet access is becoming evident. The full deployment of the mobile internet might be delayed due to the low capacity of existing cellular mobile communications systems. This research project will contribute to the understanding of fundamental capacity limitations of the mobile communications concept over communication channels that vary with time. The outcomes of the project will suggest possible solutions to the capacity limitations.Read moreRead less

The project aims to develop a framework to reuse second-life battery packs with different degradation levels. This includes a novel machine learning and online battery state estimation algorithm that does not require past use case historical data of the SLBs, an advanced control algorithm to balance the energy in each battery pack and an optimized modular inverter architecture with integrated voltage boosting capability to manage the batteries and meet the control objectives. This benefits not only the environment through delayed e-waste or recycling cycles but also helps the Australian manufacturing sector through a circular economy of energy products and services.Read moreRead less

This Network will forge new linkages between scientists and engineers to design and enable an advanced prototype for the international next-generation radio telescope, the Square Kilometre Array (SKA). The prototype will make fundamental new tests of general relativity and the physics of dark energy and test SKA imaging and signal processing systems. The Network partners will collaborate to develop low-cost technologies for ultra-wideband antennas, high-speed signal processing, software radios, mitigation of man-made interference and the handling of petabyte data sets. The aim is a leading role for Australian researchers and industry in the $2 billion SKA.Read moreRead less

Declining public trust is well recognised as a problem of democratic government, including in Australia. However solutions are more elusive, confounded by the reality that mistrust and distrust play not just negative, but positive roles in our existing political and constitutional traditions. This project aims to be the first to comprehensively map the positive values of mistrust in citizen political attitudes and experience, building on previous Constitutional Values Surveys (2008-21) to test new measures of the content of trust including a first-ever longitudinal study of changing trust over time. The results will inform concrete solutions to three key policy reform dilemmas, providing better answers for sustaining public trust overall.
