This is the critical missing technology needed to unleash exponential growth in a potentially enormous drone delivery industry by enabling a multitude of applications to deliver goods and supplies via drones to a wide range of destinations in Australia and the world in a timely, flexible and accurate manner. Such an autonomous landing solution would revolutionise drone technology, and propel Australia to the forefront of technology innovation. This project would benefit not only large scale delivery by drone in urban and suburban areas of Australia but also long distance delivery via drone to remote areas of Australia.Read moreRead less
Precision timekeeping infrastructure: bridging the hardware/software divide. Accurate time is essential for critical services from telecommunications to banking, and increasingly, must be performed with software clocks within computers, using hardware clocks accessed over the Internet. This project will bridge the hardware/software divide to deliver reliable and cost effective access to precise timing.
An integrative and distributed data management and workflow framework for e-research in biomedical imaging. This project will develop new tools for neuroimaging research: (i) efficient distributed infrastructure and workflow capabilities and (ii) semantic tools using existing ontological frameworks and specific neuroimaging ontologies.
These new capabilities will significantly enhance the productivity of neuroimaging research.
Modelling Energy Efficiency of Next-Generation Networks. The focus of this project is to develop modelling techniques for energy consumption in next-generation telecommunication networks. A growing problem for telecommunication providers is how to minimise the energy consumption of their networks. This is important in reducing their operational expenditure and meeting the energy demands of future growth in network traffic. There is an emerging trend towards next-generation networks (such as 5G w ....Modelling Energy Efficiency of Next-Generation Networks. The focus of this project is to develop modelling techniques for energy consumption in next-generation telecommunication networks. A growing problem for telecommunication providers is how to minimise the energy consumption of their networks. This is important in reducing their operational expenditure and meeting the energy demands of future growth in network traffic. There is an emerging trend towards next-generation networks (such as 5G wireless and network function virtualisation), which will use highly dynamic network architectures. Project outcomes are intended to enable real-time management of energy usage, and the assessment of the financial benefits of different investment strategies in network infrastructure.Read moreRead less
Detecting Supervisory Control and Data Access (SCADA) malicious programs to protect Australian critical infrastructure. The security of SCADA systems has enormous impact to our national security and economy because they control and monitor critical infrastructure, like power, gas and water facilities and nuclear power plants, etc. This project aims to investigate the security issues and provide innovative technological solutions to detect and prevent such problems.

Across Australia about 50 people are killed and 750 are injured in crashes at roadworks each year, costing hundreds of millions of dollars. Making roadworks safer is a complicated task, involving multiple organisations as well as the motoring public. This project will develop and evaluate an integrated program including research into new technologies, testing of strategies to improve organisational and safety culture, and investigation of education approaches. At a time of unprecedented spending on improving Australia's road infrastructure, this research will contribute to ensuring the safety of the workers directly involved in the road improvements necessary to achieve major long-term economic and social benefits.Read moreRead less

The project aims to design, implement, and integrate solutions to manage resources in cloud data centres (CDCs), especially when operating under bursty workload conditions. CDCs are expected to assure performance whilst optimising resource usage at a minimum cost, but efficiently providing resources with specific performance requirements can be difficult. This project intends to develop scalable solutions with industry approved software plug-ins. This is expected to affect both trustworthy information and communications technology (ICT) infrastructure (delivering more resilient CDCs) and economic sustainability (reducing CDC usage cost for both users and providers) of today’s computerised society.Read moreRead less

CDCs are expected to guarantee performance while optimising resource usage at a minimum cost. This incurs technical challenges that must be tackled to efficiently provision on-demand resources with specific performance requirements. The project intends to push the applicability of both current techniques and the ones to be designed in this project to industry-scale CDCs, and identify metrics and variables to holistically control service-level agreements of hosted applications. Scalable solutions with industry approved software plug-ins are the major outcomes of this project. The outcomes of this project will have a substantial impact on both environmental (lowering energy consumption to lead to greener infrastructure) and economic sustainability (reducing cloud usage cost for both users and providers) of today’s much computerised society.Read moreRead less

Computer intrusion is a major concern in many places. It is estimated that cybercrime cost firms US$1 trillion globally in 2008. Many serious cyber attacks, including cyber espionage, do not generate significant network traffic and can easily penetrate network-based intrusion detection systems (NIDS). Such attacks often attempt to compromise individual hosts and hence they are best detected at the host level. We aim to design innovative host-based IDS, as a complement to the NIDS, to address this issue. The outcomes of this project will strengthen the national capability to resist attacks by criminals and terrorists on Australian networked critical infrastructures and also enhance the global competitiveness of Australia’s information technology industry.Read moreRead less
