The distribution of medical services and its impact on access and equity is widely recognised as a key concern of the Australian community. Access and equity are key indicators to the public of the performance of a health system. These concerns have led to the adoption of major policy goals under Medicare relating to equitable access to medical services for the population as a whole. Furthermore, both the community and policy makers have expressed high levels of concern over the distribution of ....The distribution of medical services and its impact on access and equity is widely recognised as a key concern of the Australian community. Access and equity are key indicators to the public of the performance of a health system. These concerns have led to the adoption of major policy goals under Medicare relating to equitable access to medical services for the population as a whole. Furthermore, both the community and policy makers have expressed high levels of concern over the distribution of medical services between sub-markets and sub-populations, in particular, in the distribution of medical services between urban and rural-remote areas. This project, for the first time, comprehensively examines the performance of Medicare in terms of access to medical services over time. Australian data sets, largely untapped by economic modelling, will be used for analysis of the relationships between the distribution of, access to, and demand and fees for Australian medical services and their impact upon mortality over time. The study will result in the first comprehensive Australian description of access and supply of different medical services by social group and by geographic location over time. Furthermore it will provide evidence on the key determinants of distribution and changes in the distribution of medical services and estimates the likely effects of policy instruments designed to address the distribution of, and access to, medical services.Read moreRead less

Medical practitioner performance is one significant risk factor for adverse health outcomes. Medical practitioner stress has implications for practitioner performance. Among new medical graduates working in the public hospital system environmental stressors such as long working hours have traditionally been blamed as the source of stress leading to reduced performance and adverse health outcomes. However, correction of environmental stresses does not necessarily reduce junior doctors stress or i ....Medical practitioner performance is one significant risk factor for adverse health outcomes. Medical practitioner stress has implications for practitioner performance. Among new medical graduates working in the public hospital system environmental stressors such as long working hours have traditionally been blamed as the source of stress leading to reduced performance and adverse health outcomes. However, correction of environmental stresses does not necessarily reduce junior doctors stress or improve performance, implying that additional personal factors predict for poor assessed performance. Such factors may include burnout, depression, anxiety and fixed personality traits. This project will allow a detailed analysis of causal relationships between fixed personality traits, induced stress states, and external life stresses. An estimated 5,000 lives are lost each year in NSW through early deaths due to differences in socioeconomic status. While many of the causes are related to social, environmental and economic factors the health system has an important direct role through advocacy, improving access to services and reducing risks for illness. This study looks at the effectiveness of using equity focused health impact assessment to ensure health policies maximise the distribution of benefits to all groups.

In recent years there has been a rapid expansion in the number and range of interactions between the pharmaceutical industry and the medical profession. While this has the potential to advance research, education and health care, there are risks that such interactions may inappropriately serve commercial objectives and ultimately compromise the best interests of patients and society in general. To date most debate has taken the form of personal observations or professional opinion , and there has been little objective research into medical industry interactions. This project aims to examine the relationship between the pharmaceutical industry, the medical profession and the medical practitioners. Specifically, the aim of this project is to establish whether this relationship as it currently exists, and as stated in guidelines from professional bodies, is appropriate in terms of justifiable ethical standards, empirical research and social perspectives. A study of WW2 pilgrimage will explore ways the Anzac legend has been revisited, reinvented and revitalised by successive generations. First, knowing the causes and consequences of inequality is critical to making trade-offs between equity and efficiency. Second, the degree of economic mobility over the lifecycle determines how much opportunity people have to move upwards, and how much risk they face on moving downwards.
