How to use information and communication technologies (ICT) to improve teaching and learning outcomes has become a critical question for educators world-wide. Governments are investing hugely in hardware, software and infrastructure to support the use of technologies but the research conducted into their effective use in inadequate. This proposal will investigate a relatively new methodology, design experiments, that has potential to provide the basis for enhancing both pedagogy and outcomes through technology integration. The research will determine the major principles, methods and critical characteristics of design experiments, and develop guidelines for their use in ICT research.Read moreRead less
The impact of attitudes and policies relating to obesity and related health issues on school policy and practices. Governments have made and are continuing to make substantial investments in policies, strategies and research to address the perceived risk of obesity and related health issues. Schools in particular have been targeted to address the issue. This research seeks to inform public policy and school practices by examining how the new health imperatives are being taken up by schools. It will examine how these imperatives are shaping schools' priorities and teaching about health, and how this, in turn, influences young people's attitudes and understandings of their own and others' health, in particular in relation to physical activity and food.Read moreRead less
School motivation in cultural context. This study examines the importance of personal, social and educational goals to school motivation and achievement of students from diverse cultural groups. This study examines the importance of personal, social and educational goals to school motivation and achievement of students from diverse cultural groups. It examines the inter-relationships between these goals, and their impact on student motivation, achievement and school retention. The study builds on a currently funded ARC project, which is being extended in United States schools using US generated funds provided by Arizona State University and South Western Oklahoma State University. The study will provide essential information on how schools may be renewed to better suit the needs of diverse students.Read moreRead less

Life long learning has become an integral part of many people's career development. Interactive video on-demand (VoD) can be used to deliver video learning materials to students when they choose to study. The aim of this project is to investigate the research issues on designing scalable interactive VoD for e-learning. Comparing with previous work in the area, this project takes a holistic approach, which includes multicast, distributed smart caches and video coding as its building blocks. Huazhong University, who is active in e-learning research, provides an ideal location to trial interactive VoD techniques, due to their large student population. Read moreRead less
Cross-cultural analysis of constructions of health and fitness in lives of young people. This project aims to extend our understanding of how young people in Canada and Australia construct notions of health and fitness and the implications of these constructions for the ways they see themselves and the choices they make about how they live their lives. The data collected at six sites in Australia and Canada covers a range of quantitative and qualitative methods, from questionnaires to interviews ....Cross-cultural analysis of constructions of health and fitness in lives of young people. This project aims to extend our understanding of how young people in Canada and Australia construct notions of health and fitness and the implications of these constructions for the ways they see themselves and the choices they make about how they live their lives. The data collected at six sites in Australia and Canada covers a range of quantitative and qualitative methods, from questionnaires to interviews, activity observations, and visual media such as photographs. The cross-cultural comparison will serve to highlight aspects of Anglophone, Francophone, Canadian, Australian and global culture that examining in isolation may not appear 'important' to those immersed within a given culture. By bringing the existing Australian project together with a newly established Canadian project, the different expertise of the Australian and Canadian Investigators can be drawn on for the analysis and interpretation of the data.Read moreRead less
Stuctural analysis of RNA polymerase elongation complexes. RNA polymerase (RNAP) is an essential enzyme in all living cells. Its role is to convert the genetic information stored in genes into a message that can be converted into protein. Many additional factors are required to ensure that this enzyme functions correctly in the cell. The aim of this project is to obtain structural information on a bacterial RNAP complexed with an essential transcription factor called NusA. Its role is to convert the genetic information stored in genes into a message that can be converted into protein. Many additional factors are required to ensure that this enzyme functions correctly in the cell. The aim of this project is to obtain structural information on a bacterial RNAP complexed with an essential transcription factor called NusA. Using this information, plus data already obtained on the structure of this enzyme complexed with another essential factor called sigma, we will design small molecules to inhibit the interaction of these essential factors with polymerase. These molecules will serve as leads for the development of new antibiotics.Read moreRead less

The shock wave/ boundary layer interaction (SBLI) is a formidable problem in high-speed aerodynamics. We investigate a novel method, using piezoelectric flap actuators to control the interaction. The aim is to participate in an experimental programme on SBLI control using longitudinal slots at The University of Cambridge's Engineering Department, a leading international institution for SBLI control. Their longitudinal slot control is very similar to unimorph control so that this research can be used to improve the understanding of unimorph control. Furthermore, their CFD program can validate our past work and allow theoretical optimisation to create a smart flap system.Read moreRead less

The proposed research will greatly contribute to our understanding of the functioning of a bacterial membrane channel/transporter, which has played a significant role in biotechnology of commercially important amino acids. A direct national benefit will result from establishing collaboration with a leading German laboratory providing expertise in protein biochemistry and molecular microbiology not available in Australia. The acquired knowledge will present an original contribution which will have a strong impact on a very competitive field of molecular microbiology and biotechnology.Read moreRead less

Australia benefits from training researchers and technicians in new, break-through biotechnology and from applying this knowledge to relevant, cutting-edge questions in highly publicized research fields. This project contains both these ingredients. Our model species (a lizard) has a relatively high level of offspring malformations (ca 15%), which makes it much more likely to detect their underlying genetic mechanism. Furthermore, we can also assess how these animals survive and reproduce in relation to how quickly they age, which can be measured by assessing the shortening of telomeres per unit time. Thus, this collaboration provides an opportunity to train Australian researchers and in that process generate very high profile research.Read moreRead less
