Summary
When should health professionals override parents' decisions about a child's medical treatment? Doctors and nurses sometimes disagree with parents' decisions about the best treatment for a sick child. This project will establish the ethical responsibilities of both parents and health professionals in relation to medical decision-making for children.
Telling the truth to seriously ill children. This project aims to investigate how doctors and parents give information to young children who have serious medical conditions. Ethical and clinical guidelines agree that even young children should be given open, accurate and honest information in a developmentally appropriate way. However, doctors find this a challenging and uncertain area, and children do not receive open communication. There is a growing consensus that children's involvement in social research is important, but considerable uncertainty remains around children's inclusion in research on 'sensitive' issues, reflecting concerns about how to balance children's protection with their participation.
