This project seeks to incorporate non-equilibrium molecular dynamics calculations into particle scale models for adsorption kinetics. Molecular dynamics calculations will be performed for hydrocarbon molecules in small pores to obtain transport coefficients in pores of various sizes, at various bulk gas pressures and temperatures. These transport coefficients will be used in particle scale models to obtain a dynamic model, which will be utilised to interpret experimental data from the literature as well as that being obtained in our laboratory. Such first principles-based modelling has not been performed before at the particle scale, and will mitigate the empiricism in existing approaches.Read moreRead less

Many chemical reactions occurring in solid materials during heating significantly affect the materials' stability, and subsequently affects the processes of production of clean energy, material synthesis, catalyst preparation, and nanotechnology. No equipment currently exists in Australia that will mitigate the wide range of conditions in such reactions in materials processing. This situation impedes research progress in Australia, disadvantages Australian research students, and ultimately makes our research less competitive internationally. The establishment of the proposed apparatus will increase the competitiveness of Australian science and engineering, and contribute to the development of new Australian technologies that are important to the Australian economy and to environmental sustainability.Read moreRead less

A magnetorheological suspension (MRS) is a "smart material" which shows an enormous but reversible increase in flow resistance upon application of a magnetic field. These tunable fluids have many engineering applications, such as in adjustable vibration damping systems. This project comprises a series of innovative experiments and computer simulations, which will lead to a predictive constitutive model. We will investigate the underlying physical mechanisms governing the mechanical response of MRS, including the behaviour under small strains and under squeeze flow, the effects of rheometer wall conditions, and the role of matrix viscoelasticity or viscoplasticity.Read moreRead less

This project aims to develop high efficiency quantum dots based on carbon nanomaterials, integrated with scaffolds and viable tissue cells, which can be used to develop smart implants with monitoring capabilities to reduce patient trauma and expenses. In certain cases, more than 50% of medical implants fail. Improving effective intervention is urgently needed, particularly monitoring of implants and early diagnosis to prevent rejections and adverse reactions. Current methods are inefficient, expensive, and induce toxicity. A non-toxic and non-invasive method to monitor the progress of tissue regeneration and wound healing is expected to place Australia at the forefront of developing implants.Read moreRead less
Sustainable molecular and chemical engineering of stimuli-responsive soft materials. Detergents, made from non-renewable resources, are used everywhere to control foam stability; this research will deliver new detergents that are both sustainable and stimuli-responsive, meaning that foam can be switched on and off as needed. The technology will have global impact including in key Australian industries such as food and mining.
