The Australian Height Datum (AHD) forms the fundamental framework for all vertical spatial information in Australia. It supports a wide range of applications in areas such as geodesy, surveying, mapping, telecommunications, resource exploration and environmental science. This medium-term research programme will investigate the many issues surrounding the integrity of the AHD, and will rigorously redefine, correct and unify it within a global vertical framework. This will provide improved height information to the numerous users of the AHD in Australia, and allow Australia to contribute more fully to the global spatial data infrastructure.Read moreRead less

This interdisciplinary project develops a highly novel total network strategy for real-time kinematic GPS positioning services using the Internet communication protocols for data transmission. The proposed system is technically superior to existing network-based differential GPS (DGPS) systems, by providing positioning services at different accuracy levels (metre to centimetre) with reduced operational cost to users. The research focuses on improved network operations and processing, along with developing user-specific algorithms. The outcomes are expected to provide significant opportunities for both real time and near-real-time kinematic positioning applications and commercialisations of such services, in urban and regional areas of Australia.Read moreRead less

Earth processes over geological timescales cannot be understood outside of a plate tectonic context. However, no standard tool exists to explore the causes and effects of lithosphere-mantle interaction in accordance with past plate configurations. Our aim is to develop a Palaeo-Geographic Information System called EarthByte that will connect the open source and architecture-independent GPlates and GMT software, and implement XML-based service interfaces and databases. EarthByte will create the foundation for an e-geoscience framework for grid-based data access and Earth process modelling by linking geological and geophysical observations to palaeogeographic models for constraining mantle convection and lithospheric deformation.Read moreRead less

We propose to connect two key national Simulation and Modelling infrastructures to a novel geodynamic modelling tool, developed specifically for modelling plate tectonics at the global and regional scale and suitable to unravel the causes and consequences of sudden global plate tectonic reorganizations. The knowledge-base derived from this work will considerably improve our understanding of catastrophic tectonic events affecting plate boundaries and plate interiors.Read moreRead less
The Subduction Reference Framework: unravelling the causes of long-term sea-level change. Long-term global sea level fluctuations have been a driving force of biogeography, climate change and organic evolution. The project outcomes will include predictive models of sedimentation and erosion in continental interiors, and will transform knowledge about the nature and magnitude of natural planetary change. It will help foster collaborations between the biological and mathematical scientists. Biological research is an important part of Australia's future and is becoming very quantitative. During the course of the project, two PhD students will be provided strong training in Statistics geared towards biological applications. The project is aligned with the 8th Human Leucocyte Differentiation Antigen workshop to culminate in Adelaide in December 2004 and will aid the fight against blood cell cancers. The project will also aid research on plankton with potential commercial benefits for Australia's marine scallop industry.

It is also popularly applied to applications such as Web search engine designs and marketing analysis. This project aims to advance the area of link analysis by allowing the incorporation of contextual information which accounts for relationships among actors properly. Advances in link detection will allow improvements in security and Web services on which a wide field of national bodies rely. This project can help to place Australia at the forefront of this research area.Read moreRead less

Improved understanding of neurological processes is crucial to improving clinical outcomes for patients. MedVis will contribute in three ways: support development of new methods of interpretation and analysis of complex neurological studies, allowing current methods to be applied more efficiently, and enabling distributed simulations and visualisations in real-time from remote sites.
The leading-edge, grid-based, software and computational techniques developed for the project will enable visualization, analysis and modelling of massive volumes of image and other visualisation data. This capability is important in medical research where large visualisation data volumes are being created and studied by experts remote from each other.

We will build an astronomy data facility to provide database facilities to analyse data from three major Australian optical astronomy projects, SkyMapper, WiggleZ and GAMA. The facility will provide efficient analysis tools not only for the researchers immediately involved with the projects, but, for the entire national and international astronomical community when the data become public. Long-term maintenance of the facility is vital, so the facility will be standards-compliant and stable to facilitate long-term support. For this reason the facility will be based at the ANU Supercomputer Facility (ANUSF) to leverage substantial expertise in this area and to provide long-term operations support.Read moreRead less
