Women with diabetes in pregnancy and their babies are more likely to have health problems, e.g. preeclampsia, being born early, or admitted to neonatal intensive care unit. We know that lowering mum’s blood glucose to the levels found in women without diabetes is important but does not prevent problems completely. The purpose of these studies is to look at the other parts of metabolism that are different in women with diabetes e.g. blood fats, so we can understand if we should address them.

Summary
Using DNA sequencing, recent studies have identified a diverse community of bacteria on the eye, once believed to be sparsely populated by microbes. This project will identify what is the resident bacteria of the eye and where these bacteria reside on the eye. Also, after cataract surgery some individuals experience dry eye problems. This project will investigate if antibiotic therapy, necessary to prevent infection, disrupts the microbial communities on the eye leading to development of dry eye

Chronic suppurative lung disease (CSLD) affects 1 in 68 Indigenous children in the Northern Territory. The condition leads to loss of lung function which reduces life-expectancy.
