The Development of English Economic Vocabulary to 1776: the Formation of a Disciplinary Language. The language of economic science is fundamental to all social theory - and indeed, to how modern societies perceive themselves. Where does that vocabulary - both the language and the concepts carried by that language - come from? How did it develop? The aim of this research project is to clarify the answers to these two questions, up to the time at which political economy or economics became a mature intellectual system - in Adam Smith's 1776 "Wealth of Nations". This will be the first such systematic and comprehensive book-length study of the formation of this disciplinary language ever attempted.Read moreRead less

The development of a stable, prosperous and democratic Indonesia is fundamental to Australia's long-term security. Systemic corruption has been identified as a fundamental impediment to such development and the Australian Government through AUSAID funds institutional reform programs. Yet formal law remains ineffective and corruption has continued to flourish, pointing to weaknesses of policy design. This project will explain how competing political elites systematically use the leverage of the state to redistribute resources within business and society and seek to identify the formal and informal rules that underpin such behaviour. Outcomes will be better models and more effective governance reforms.Read moreRead less

This project aims to contribute to a deeper understanding of the long-run economic impact of the Arab-Israeli conflict. Combining the tools of historical research and empirical economic analysis, it aims to investigate four specific economic aspects of the conflict: the origin and implications of the economic separation between Arabs and Jews; the conflict's costs and the related spillover effects to the Middle East; the evolution of the Israeli-Palestinian labour market; and, the study of trade relations between Israel, Palestine and the Middle East. The analysis will provide new insights to improve the prospects for viable economic growth and development in the region through trade policy and increased labour market integration.Read moreRead less
The World Economy, India and Exchange Banks: 1850 - 1914. This project aims to examine how exchange banks linked India to an expanding world economy between 1850 and 1914, and to show, in turn, how this process was defined by an imperial relationship that tied India to Britain. Its significance lies in the fact that while the exchange banks were central to the circulation of capital during this period, their crucial role in shaping the development of capitalism in India has been largely ignored. ....The World Economy, India and Exchange Banks: 1850 - 1914. Expected outcomes include conference presentations, at least three articles, a monograph, and a digitised map that links time and space in outlining the spread of such banks.Read moreRead less

Understanding industrialisation, entrepreneurship, and technology adoption in emerging economies: new evidence from historical Japanese firms. Japan's pre-war industrialisation is widely used as a model by emerging economies, despite a lack of detailed data. This project provides a new firm-level dataset from hitherto unused archives, which allows empirical testing of theories about entrepreneurial activity, technology adoption, financial access, and other determinants of economic growth.

Korea is the third largest export market for Australia, however, analysis of the structure and strategy of Korea's largest corporations has been surprisingly neglected by Australian researchers. This project examines recent changes in the operation of the largest family controlled conglomerates in Korea (chaebol), which possess unique features in various aspects, within a dynamic historical perspective. Case studies will be conducted concentrating on changes of business structure and strategy within Samsung, LG, Hyundai and Daewoo, with particular attention to these companies, response to the 1997 economic crisis and its implications for major trading partners such as Australia.Read moreRead less

The Allocation of Risk and Economic Slumps. The aim of this project is to construct and analyse models that identify a novel feedback mechanism in which the distribution of investment risk interacts with aggregate employment variations. It will provide a useable framework for economic policy analysis in which the distribution of wealth affects the demand for investment risk while the distribution of production risk affects the supply of labour income risk.

We will all gain from an improved understanding of some of the major historical developments of the modern period. But in addition to this, at a time when judicial proceedings are being suspended and extra-judicial detentions, and punishments are increasing, it is useful to consider the history of these activities in other societies. It is sobering to see what measures Stalin introduced to carry out what he considered to be a war on terrorism. We need to be aware of the causes of Stalinism in order to avoid similar consequences elsewhere.
