Summary
The Science of Learning Research Centre. In this innovative new Centre, researchers in education, neuroscience and cognitive psychology will work together with teachers to understand the learning process. This collaboration will establish new criteria to assess the impact of different types of learning and strategies to inform teaching practices of benefit to all Australians.
The ageing brain: plasticity and training. This project will investigate how the capacity of a person's brain for reorganisation (plasticity) influences cognitive and motor function and training benefits in older adults. The findings will support new training initiatives to promote brain health and well-being across the lifespan.
The role of inhibitory conditioning in choice and decision-making. This project will investigate the psychological and neural processes that mediate choice and decision-making, specifically the role of information that biases choice away from, as opposed to towards, action alternatives. It will target the role of inhibitory learning in choice and use different forms of conditioned inhibition to investigate this process.

Theorists have argued that learning is driven by two opposite motivational systems: an appetitive system that deals with positive events and an aversive system that processes negative events. Specifically, the aims of the project are to identify biological and cognitive markers that reflect ADHD in its untreated form, and markers that discriminate treatment effects relative to the pre treatment profile. Does obesity alter the associations to food related cues, contexts and responses? Obesity is increasing dramatically in the developed world. The reasons for this are unclear, however the abundance of cheap, palatable food is clearly a contributing factor. Studies suggest differences arise in the processing of food rewards between overweight and lean individuals and the way they respond to food associated cues. This indicates that food associated cues may be more likely to evoke feeding behaviour ....Does obesity alter the associations to food related cues, contexts and responses? Studies suggest differences arise in the processing of food rewards between overweight and lean individuals and the way they respond to food associated cues. This indicates that food associated cues may be more likely to evoke feeding behaviours in absence of metabolic needs, therefore contributing to over eating that leads to obesity. The psychobiology of forgetting: Opioid receptors and inhibitory constraints on storage of long-term memory. This project has four main national benefits. First, it addresses a fundamental scientific and practical issue: the psychobiology of forgetting. Second, it will provide important insights into variations in memory functioning across the lifespan. A significant challenge facing Australia is understanding, and where possible alleviating, the decline in mental function that occurs with age. ....The psychobiology of forgetting: Opioid receptors and inhibitory constraints on storage of long-term memory. Recent concerns surround the impact of drug abuse - particularly binge drinking, inhalant abuse and cannabis use - on the mental health of adolescents. Early drug use is associated with mental health problems although the mechanisms involved are not well characterised. ADHD causes substantial problems at school and if untreated, predisposes the individual to increased drug and alcohol use, marital breakdown, criminal prosecution and psychiatric problems in later life.
