Australian Network on Microelectronics, Optoelectronics and Microelectromechanical Systems. The Network will encompass semiconductor microelectronics, optoelectronics, sensors and microelectromechanical systems (MEMS). Fundamental research in these areas enables the technological advances that underpin rapidly developing industries such as information and telecommunications technologies, defence, aerospace, medicine, and remote sensing. Fundamental research in these areas enables the technological advances that underpin rapidly developing industries such as information and telecommunications technologies, defence, aerospace, medicine, and remote sensing. Exciting challenges exist in designing new devices that exploit unique semiconductor systems and technologies. By sharing capabilities and resources (both capital and human), the network will enable the issues associated with such novel materials and devices to be addressed in a targeted manner. The solution to the existing explosion in distribution network costs is to develop customer-responsive solutions in demand management and use of storage. Ultra-high spectral purity lasers for tests of relativity and atomic clocks. Measurement precision is the key to advancement of a technological society. This project aims to build the most precise measurement tool ever developed: one capable of delivering 17 digits of precision in just 1 second. In conjunction with German and French colleagues this too will be used to test the foundation theories of physics.
