Depressive and anxiety disorders are common in the working population and costly. Individuals can continue working while ill or take an absence from work. This study will evaluate the economic cost and health outcomes of these two scenarios, using existing and published data to develop descriptive models. We consider who pays and who benefits from the perspective of the individual, their employer and society, to inform policy making, management practices, and clinical care.

Summary
Productivity loss related to mental illness. Digital technologies improve mental health and wellbeing at the workplace. A multimodal digital platform is the software of a website allowing for the interaction of its users and including different modules such as apps, chatbots and virtual assistants. This will be the first multimodal platform developed in Europe. We will provide a critical knowledge transfer for its design, pilot and implementation and will coordinate the impact analysis.
Understanding low skilled men's access to jobs: An occupational case-study approach. The withdrawal of low skilled men from the labour force has been substantial over recent decades. As many as 40% of men without post-school qualifications do not have full-time jobs. This development has many negative social consequences. It damages the affected men's wellbeing, and that of their families. It reduces labour supply at a time of labour shortages. Despite the significant personal, societal and economic cost of these poor outcomes there has been little research into these areas. Understanding and preventing workforce vulnerabilities in midlife and beyond. This project brings together frontline service agencies with researchers from two universities to study involuntary non-participation and under-participation in the labour market by midlife Australians. Quantitative and qualitative approaches will be used to understand pathways and outcomes so as to inform policy and practice responses.

The Government’s Paid Parental Leave (PPL) scheme, which aims to improve workforce participation and maternal and infant health, is particularly significant for young mothers who were unlikely to have had access to paid leave previously. An intervention, implemented at the Royal Women’s Hospital in Melbourne, will provide information to young mothers and help them apply for PPL and will be evaluated in terms of its impact on workforce participation and maternal and infant health.
