A critical factor that enhances frontier research is a set of advanced core research experimental facilities for material characterisation purposes. The proposed equipment aims to: (1) provide research facilities for advanced nanomaterial research; (2) improve national competitiveness and growth in a knowledge-based economy; and (3) foster local talented researchers in order to meet the strategic needs of the nation for a sustainable environment. These activities will revitalise Australia's leading role in creating new technologies with particular relevance to using advanced nanostructures for the production of clean air and water, and sustainable energy alternatives.Read moreRead less

Sunlight reaching the earth is used by plants and algae to drive photosynthesis and to store chemical energy. Possibly the most fundamental contribution photosynthesis makes to earth is to generate gaseous oxygen, the result of solar driven water-splitting chemistry. However, the mechanism behind water-splitting is not exactly known. In this proposal we will construct a new model cyanobacteria host to study water splitting. The host organism will be genetically modified to enable mechanistic questions of water oxidation to be tested and will provide new and pure forms of isolated protein. This model organism will provide team of international researchers with a remarkable tool new to study photosynthesis.Read moreRead less

Reactive flow through porous media by micro-imaging. Australia is embarking on the development of major gas fields offshore Western Australia. These developments are very costly and techniques to manage the risk in development are well sought after. This project assists in risk management of tertiary recovery methods and CO2 storage. Further, it can contribute significantly to the accurate forward modelling of storage of hazardous materials and pollution remediation strategies. Probing anti-ferroelectric to ferroelectric structural phase transitions: towards high power energy transformation devices. Materials which can be rapidly switched from anti-ferroelectric to ferroelectric states exhibit a wide range of exploitable properties. This project will identify the factors enabling such materials to respond to applied electric fields and mechanical stresses and use them to enhance the ability of industry to develop new advanced materials.
Production, processing and combustion of an innovative slurry fuel for high efficiency distributed power generation. This project will advance the science underpinning the development of an innovative technology for energy production (with carbon capture) and use in remote regions. The outcomes of this research will help meet the great challenges of climate change and contribute to the development of an environmentally sustainable Australia.
Self-Powered Wireless Sensor Networks, Enabling an Intelligent Agricultural Environment. Most animal production enterprises could be considerably more productive if the physiological status of each animal were to be continuously monitored, and the appropriate adjustments were made in real time. The proposed project will develop technologies that will enable continuous, real-time monitoring resulting in more efficient use of Australia's resources. Furthermore, research on wireless sensor network ....Self-Powered Wireless Sensor Networks, Enabling an Intelligent Agricultural Environment. Most animal production enterprises could be considerably more productive if the physiological status of each animal were to be continuously monitored, and the appropriate adjustments were made in real time. The proposed project will develop technologies that will enable continuous, real-time monitoring resulting in more efficient use of Australia's resources. Furthermore, research on wireless sensor networks, or ambient intelligence as it is sometimes called, is at the forefront of wireless communications and indeed ICT technology. This project will benefit Australia's ICT community both by training new professional and research leaders in this area, and by developing technologies that will further enable this rapidly growing field.Read moreRead less

Towards a steady-state fusion reactor: understanding and controlling eruptive instabilities in tokamaks. The lifetime of future fusion reactors may be severely compromised by periodic releases of internal energy which can damage the reactor walls. In an international research effort that is based on unique Australian optical technologies, the project aims to resolve some of the key issues that should allow these instabilities to be suppressed.
