In a country that is experiencing increasing urban density there is an urgent need for the development of tools and models for the production of socially and culturally responsive environments. The Fellowship develops a new quantitative and qualitative understanding of the experiential and semiotic characteristics of buildings. The project, assisted by developments in robotics technology, produces a leading-edge computational model for analysing complex and non-linear patterns in architectural space, form and program from a social and cultural perspective. Such a model will assist design practitioners, scholars, town planners and policy writers to shape rich, responsive and inclusive architectural environments.Read moreRead less
Decorum as an Idea in Architecture, from the Renaissance to the Present. Examines the theory and practice of decorum in architecture from the Renaissance to the present day. The principal aims are to set decorum within the history of ideas and to establish the relevance of the concept to modernism and contemporary debates on the nature of architecture. The project will be empirically innovative and significant to both historians and theorists. The expected outcome is a book-length study.
To establish a chronology for Early Gothic 1100-1170 in the Paris Basin. The aim is to identify, from every example of a single repeatable type of decoration - foliage - the more innovative carvers of northern France between 1100 and 1170, and by analysing the evolution of each man's personal style, to date the key buildings. This will provide a coherent foundation for a much-needed chronology of Early Gothic. Current dating is far from uniform, being individual reflections on style not based on any common theme, and often with strong nationalistic overtones. Lacking a firm chronology, histories are inconsistent and contradictory. The outcome of this study should resolve this impasse. Read moreRead less
The influence of Contemporary Japanese architecture: its meanings and its miss-readings. Contemporary architecture and urbanism in Australia has generally been concerned with addressing 'modernity' while little concerned with specific culture or place, and with little discernable ideology. Consequently, the City of Sydney is much used by international film-makers as an undifferentiated generic metropolis backdrop. In contrast, Japan's contemporary architects have developed a politically-charged ....The influence of Contemporary Japanese architecture: its meanings and its miss-readings. Contemporary architecture and urbanism in Australia has generally been concerned with addressing 'modernity' while little concerned with specific culture or place, and with little discernable ideology. Consequently, the City of Sydney is much used by international film-makers as an undifferentiated generic metropolis backdrop. In contrast, Japan's contemporary architects have developed a politically-charged architecture which registers the complexity of their national identity while turning its back on nationalism. This project will contrast the ideologies of leading contemporary architects in Japan and Australia and will serve as a benchmark against which contemporary Australian architecture can be assessed.Read moreRead less
Rediscovering historical contributions in environmental planning: Australia's Town Planning Associations. This study will provide an alternative history of Australian urban planning that will document at a national level how non-government organisations contributed positively and creatively to the evolution of modern environmental planning from the 20th century. It will support the strengthening of Australia's social and economic fabric by discovering through original historical research how pre ....Rediscovering historical contributions in environmental planning: Australia's Town Planning Associations. This study will provide an alternative history of Australian urban planning that will document at a national level how non-government organisations contributed positively and creatively to the evolution of modern environmental planning from the 20th century. It will support the strengthening of Australia's social and economic fabric by discovering through original historical research how previous generations have productively and creatively contributed to decisions affecting general environmental well-being. It will contribute an historical perspective to current debates on the need for more collaborative planning.Read moreRead less

This project investigates the proliferation of non-war memorials in Australia within the framework of an emerging culture of commemoration from the mid twentieth century. It explores important shifts in the purpose of memorials and their role and meaning in Australian society, particularly the move towards a more democratic and personal expression of mourning in public arenas. The project assesses the cultural significance of particular sites through a nationally devised schema which takes account of their place in the landscape, their form and materiality and will contribute to contemporary heritage conservation research, policy and practice.Read moreRead less
THE UNWRITTEN HISTORY OF AUSTRALIAN MODERNISM. Most histories treat modernism in Australia as a phenomenon of ?fine art,? or simply painting. This project will instead reveal modernism's highly public impact across a range of media (design, photography, advertising, architecture and art). This new history will better explain how modernist visual idioms became ubiquitous in everyday contemporary design and our built environment after their initial, often hostile reception. This project will instead reveal modernism's highly public impact across a range of media (design, photography, advertising, architecture and art). This new history will better explain how modernist visual idioms became ubiquitous in everyday contemporary design and our built environment after their initial, often hostile reception. The project will provide an integrated research analysis of the extensive, but disparate, archives on Australian modernism. It will communicate its research findings through a new scholarly study, a major large-scale travelling public exhibition, a CD, and a website.Read moreRead less
