This research will assist the built environment professions and their clients to make better decisions about new developments through a novel 'learning by doing' approach. Used successfully in other fields such as natural resource management, this idea will capitalise on the large number of asset investments undertaken to benchmark original stakeholder intentions and aspirations against the reality of current performance. Decisions will be re-evaluated in the context of contemporary economic, social and environmental criteria to enable existing multi-criteria models to deliver more sustainable outcomes that are also feasible and in the national interest, and consequently minimise the industry's current exposure to future climate change.Read moreRead less
Strategic Assessment of Building Adaptive Reuse Opportunities. This research will review a large database of existing buildings, many of which have exceeded their useful life. An innovative model will be developed to enable Australia's building and property industries to identify the most viable opportunities for building adaptive reuse. An innovative model will be developed to enable Australia's building and property industries to identify the most viable opportunities for building adaptive reuse. The model will integrate financial, environmental and social sustainability, enabling community stakeholders to make informed decisions with widespread benefits. The research is aligned with the national priority area: An Environmentally Sustainable Australia: Transforming Existing Industries. The expertise developed in this project will be regionally and internationally applicable, providing momentum for the growing adaptive design and conservation market.Read moreRead less
Emerging futures: transit-oriented development as a strategy for dealing with urban sprawl and congestion in South East Queensland. This project will examine the phenomenon of urban sprawl in SEQ to understand how sprawl is impacting on architectural and urban environments. Transit-oriented devlopment (TOD)is seen as a global strategy for inhibiting urban sprawl, but the benefits of TOD are not yet measured in Australia. With increased density around railway infrastructure the threat to public safety is raised. This study will examine the wider issues of TOD with respect to four inter-disciplinary areas: architecture and urban design, urban planning, security, counter-terrorism and threat management, transport strategy and insitutional management.Read moreRead less
The Baroque in Architectural Culture, 1880-1980. This project will show the significance of historical architecture in the present day, and lead to better understanding of the cultural role of building. It will enhance the reputation of Australian research on the architectural history of early modern Europe, and on issues of historical method. It will train emerging researchers and develop a research environment for further research on this field. The project will foster international connection ....The Baroque in Architectural Culture, 1880-1980. This project builds on original research into community vulnerability, awareness and preparedness for natural hazards. During the second half of the United Nations International Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction, the trend in emergency management and disaster mitigation research has been towards the social and community impacts of natural disasters. The aim of the project is to examine risk perception amongst hazard vulnerable communities. The expected outcomes include an improved awareness campaign and a better understanding of the ways in which warnings and forecasts are filtered and distorted by the public.Read moreRead less

Oceans Law and Policy Library. This project will establish a library facility providing a comprehensive collection of international and domestic primary and secondary source materials in ocean law and policy. Materials will be both hard copy and electronic, facilitating access of materials from remote locations by partner institutions. The library will be located at the University of Wollongong, an international leader in oceans law and policy research, through the Centre for Maritime Policy. ....Oceans Law and Policy Library. The partner universities are home to the principal centres of marine scientific research in Australia. The project will permit interdisciplinary work to be undertaken in oceans law, policy and science, allowing additional development of Australia's skill base in these fields.Read moreRead less

Atmospheric fate and processes of semi-volatile organic compounds in tropical climates. The outcomes from this study will contribute fundamental and quantitative information for evaluation of the fate of semi-volatile organic compounds (SOCs) in tropical systems, including Australia's World Heritage ecosystems such as rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef. The study addresses key international knowledge gaps with respect to the influence of climate on SOC atmospheric fate. Australia's geographic ....Atmospheric fate and processes of semi-volatile organic compounds in tropical climates. Australia's geographical location within the tropical belt provides an ideal opportunity for leading this field of research and contributes relevant data for its commitment under the Stockholm Convention.Read moreRead less
