Increasing confidence in Australian carbon disclosures. This project aims to investigate whether carbon disclosures made by Australian resource firms are less than actual emissions (i.e., carbonwashing) using satellite imagery technology. New knowledge will be generated by triangulating carbonwashing information against firm data, such as valuation, other disclosures, and hiring practices, to understand if and how carbonwashing impacts firm values and organisational controls. Expected outcomes include improved ways to detect carbonwashing and its relationship to management control weaknesses, benefiting all stakeholders (including investors and regulators) in supporting government-proposed reforms to the Australian Safeguard Mechanism in instilling confidence in Australian carbon disclosures.Read moreRead less
Embedded emissions accounting: frameworks for trade in a net-zero world. This project aims to inform Government on potential accounting frameworks for greenhouse emissions embedded in tradable products. Public frameworks are urgently needed given the emergence internationally of trade-related climate policies such as carbon border adjustment mechanisms. The project expects to contribute to global knowledge on embedded emissions frameworks by combining economic, engineering, science and policy perspectives. Expected outcomes include improved: capability within Government; understanding among Australian stakeholders; and integration with international approaches. Expected benefits include lower regulatory barriers to global emissions reductions, and fairer access to international markets for Australian producers. Read moreRead less

The aim of this research project is to turn the tide on misleading corporate climate pledges and systematise the assessment of companies' climate performance by using a science-based approach. A critical strategic priority urgently called for during recent international climate negotiations, the research conducted will be translated into a global platform where corporate Paris Compliance information will be shared openly and transparently. This will bolster businesses’ climate action by outlining meaningful and effective decarbonisation pathways, allowing all stakeholders to make climate-safe decisions, and guiding policy makers to enforce the required changes for any business to become Paris-compliant. This project aims to create new mathematical models and approaches for the fair valuation and hedging of financial derivatives, tackling funding for climate change adaptation and catastrophic disaster risk management. Businesses use derivatives to strategically mitigate financial losses from adverse climate conditions and geological hazards. Expected outcomes are improved models for weather variables and hazard risk assessment; richer methodology from the fusion of mathematical techniques, data analysis and earth sciences perspectives; and quantitative solutions to pressing societal concerns. Significant benefits also include highly qualified personnel training and international collaboration on common multidisciplinary research priorities.Read moreRead less
International Trade, Climate Change and Economic Policy. The research project addresses the role of, and interactions between, environmental and international trade policies within the context of a global economy with increasingly open economies whose production and consumption activities generate emissions of greenhouse gases that accumulate in the atmosphere and have potentially adverse effects on the world’s climate, which then impacts the environment, production and households. The objective is to develop better understanding of the nexus between the international economy, climate change through the environment, and international trade and environmental policies. It will achieve this objective by analyses of multi-country models of international trade, climate change and policy design.Read moreRead less

Marine conservation remains severely underfunded, with the private sector increasingly promoted as a solution. This project investigates under which circumstances sustainable business models can be developed to generate profit alongside positive marine conservation outcomes. By collecting data from coastal stakeholders in Fiji and the Philippines, the project will conduct the first in depth examination of relationships between the institutional, financial, and business aspects of marine conservation. Expected outcomes include enhanced cooperation and decision-making among entrepreneurs, investors, and environmental managers – to implement solutions to effectively and equitably safeguard ocean resources, ecosystems, and coastal communities.Read moreRead less
Storage and the Hotelling Valuation Principle: Understanding the Dynamics of the Oil Industry. Understanding the economics of the oil market is important for understanding the shift toward smaller, more fuel-efficient motor vehicles and less fuel-intensive farming techniques. International coalitions for climate change mitigation: the role of carbon market linkages and trade restrictions. This project uses cooperative game theory, implementation theory and agent-based modelling to investigate how coalitions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions could be formed and maintained among countries. Applications include the role of carbon market linkage and trade policy, in countries of the Asia-Pacific region.

The issue of climate change and policy responses is one of the most important questions facing the world today. This research develops a global framework for understanding the many complexities surrounding this issue, for undertaking projections of emissions, for evaluating alternative policy proposals and for developing new policies. In particular it will provide a framework for undertaking alternative scenarios about future economic growth and carbon emissions and attempt to quantify uncertainties. It will also focus on major developing countries such as China and India which will be critical in the future evolution of world economic activity and greenhouse emissions.Read moreRead less

An Investigation of Common Factors in the Underperformance of IPOs, SEOs and Mergers. Findings in line with our expectation, that equity financing transactions are followed by substantial share market losses, will greatly benefit managers of public companies, investment analysts and professional fund managers. Firms that overuse equity financing will be highlighted and can expect closer monitoring by the capital market. Analysts would review past equity raisings and build them into their investment recommendations. The added attention should trigger changes to managers' compensation contracts and companies' governance systems. Investment funds would be redirected away from companies that squander their equity capital and channelled into more worthwhile investment opportunities. Widespread community benefits will result.Read moreRead less
