This study will improve the quality and interpretation of the terrestrial fauna surveys used as a basis for Environmental Impact Assessment in the mining industry. As a consequence, the Environment Protection Authority will better understand the potential impacts of mining on biodiversity and ecosystems, and can place more appropriate conditions on mining companies and their rehabilitation programs. In addition, the study will report on strategies for detecting rare and endangered species, and the development of appropriate databases to enable terrestrial fauna data to be interpreted in the context of soils and vegetation at habitat, landscape and regional scales.Read moreRead less
A molecular ecophysiological assessment of the importance of using local provenance seed in plant biodiversity restoration. The rehabilitation of Australia's unique plant diversity, following disturbance, is an increasingly important activity nationally, involving industry, government and community. The use of local seeds is recognised as best practise, but how local is local? We will use molecular tools to identify the extent of local seed transfer zones, conduct trials to assess the relative performance of local and non-local seeds (is there a home-site advantage?), and assess the consequences of mixing provenances for future generations. We will work closely with industry and community restoration practitioners to improve the effectiveness of restoration, with benefits flowing nationally through general provenance guidelines.Read moreRead less

Federal and state programs and community and NGO activities increasingly focus on ecosystem restoration as a tool in conservation and natural resource management. Clearer understanding of ecosystem dynamics and better articulation of realistic restoration goals can lead to much improved restoration success and better investment of government and private funds. This project will provide a better understanding of ecosystem dynamics both under current conditions and also as influenced by future environmental changes. The contribution to the theoretical and conceptual development of the field of restoration ecology will increase the profile of Australian science and enhance our reputation as leaders in this field. Optimizing mine floor ripping strategies for diverse regolith types to enhance rehabilitation success. The aim of the project is to identify poorly structured subsoils developed in regolith materials in rehabilitated bauxite mines and develop procedures for minimising the effects of poor soil structure on tree growth. Well structured regolith types will also be identified as sites requiring less ripping. Large-scale field trials will be established to examine the impact of ripping on different ....Optimizing mine floor ripping strategies for diverse regolith types to enhance rehabilitation success. The aim of the project is to identify poorly structured subsoils developed in regolith materials in rehabilitated bauxite mines and develop procedures for minimising the effects of poor soil structure on tree growth. Well structured regolith types will also be identified as sites requiring less ripping. Large-scale field trials will be established to examine the impact of ripping on different regolith types. Methods will be developed to enable prediction of regolith structure based on instumented rippers, drill hole data and remote sensing. Greater success of revegetation practices and a decrease in annual ripping costs ($1.3 m) are anticipated.Read moreRead less
Mechanisms fo Release of Deep Dormancy in Seeds of Australian Plant Species used in Land Restoration. Over 4 million Ha of Australian land is currently in need of revegetation. Over 4 million Ha of Australian land is currently in need of revegetation. To facilitate this, large-scale revegetation programs utilising native species are urgently required. Currently, many desirable species are difficult to propagate due to deep intractable dormancy, but are nevertheless needed due to their keystone function in many ecosystems. The aim is to therefore investigate seed dormancy alleviation in key rehabilitation species. Outcomes flowing from this project will significantly increase the suite of species currently available for land restoration efforts by land rehabilitation practitioners and will therefore increase the quality and effectiveness of Australian restoration programs.Read moreRead less

Discovery of the identity of the component in smoke (a butenolide) that promotes seed germination provides the research platform to deliver smoke-like efficacy for germination of native species used in horticulture, land restoration and biodiversity conservation. The study will investigate five key areas to deliver the national benefits of our discovery: investigate efficacy of butenolide in seed germination; resolve mechanisms of dormancy release via butenolide; optimise synthesis pathways for production of butenolide and germination-effective analogues; investigate the ecologiocal context and natural abundance of butenolide; resolve synthesis and delivery systems for horticulture and restoration.Read moreRead less
Arsenic and copper cycling in the soil-plant continuum in water-limited mining environments. This project will characterise cycling of arsenic and copper in the landscape after gold mining and will establish environmental risk-assessment framework. The results of this project will improve rehabilitation of mining-affected areas.
Optimising seed sourcing for effective ecological restoration. This project aims to address the sourcing of native seed for ecological restoration under global change. The great demand for native seed to deliver ecological restoration provides a clear need and responsibility to use this seed as efficiently as possible. This project aims to address the sourcing of native seed for ecological restoration under global change. The great demand for native seed to deliver ecological restoration provides a clear need and responsibility to use this seed as efficiently as possible. This project expects to develop detailed new knowledge that links plant and environmental genomics, plant physiology, seed and soil biology in embedded experiments at post-mining rehabilitation sites. Expected outcomes include clear industry guidelines that refine seed sourcing strategies for ecological restoration for current and future climates. This should provide significant benefits for improved ecological restoration outcomes when using native seed today and into the future.Read moreRead less

The orchid species and associated fungal symbionts must be succesfully established at a site to achieve a self-sustaining population. Currently little is know about the in situ interactions of orchid and fungal endophytes. Research here will determine essential field interactions and requirements of both partners. The ex situ conservation of rare and endangered species should included reliable long-term storage of propagation material such as seed. Information obtained will be used to develop orchid conservation packages for implementation by landmanagers.Read moreRead less

The knowledge and practical outcomes generated from this project will facilitate more effective restoration of degraded native ecosystems through the return of a wider range of key understorey plant taxa and more efficient use of seed supplies. Availability of a broader suite of species will increase biodiversity, improve ecosystem resilience to change, and help in the conservation and recovery of nationally threatened taxa. By increasing the range of species with horticultural potential available for commercial propagation, it will also reduce the harvest of wild flowers. More efficient production and use of seed stocks will reduce the pressure on limited seed resources from seed harvesting.Read moreRead less
