Oceans Law and Policy Library. This project will establish a library facility providing a comprehensive collection of international and domestic primary and secondary source materials in ocean law and policy. Materials will be both hard copy and electronic, facilitating access of materials from remote locations by partner institutions. The library will be located at the University of Wollongong, an international leader in oceans law and policy research, through the Centre for Maritime Policy. ....Oceans Law and Policy Library. This project will establish a library facility providing a comprehensive collection of international and domestic primary and secondary source materials in ocean law and policy. Materials will be both hard copy and electronic, facilitating access of materials from remote locations by partner institutions. The library will be located at the University of Wollongong, an international leader in oceans law and policy research, through the Centre for Maritime Policy. The partner universities are home to the principal centres of marine scientific research in Australia. This new technology will support a greener future, securing our energy future, our access to clean water and reduce the mining footprint. A state-of-the-art microflow ultra high performance liquid chromatography high resolution mass spectrometer is fundamental to extend our research capabilities to new environmental contaminants and environmental exposure biomarkers, as well as consumption biomarkers of new illicit drugs and their metabolites. Fast disk capacity that is simultaneously connected to NCI long-term storage, cloud and high performance computing s ....Connecting big data with high performance computing for climate science. Connecting big data with high performance computing for climate science: The ARC Centre of Excellence for Climate System Science is a key user of the National Computational Infrastructure facility (NCI). This research requires massive data integrated with high performance computing in an operational facility. Fast disk capacity that is simultaneously connected to NCI long-term storage, cloud and high performance computing severely limits use of the NCI. To resolve this limitation, 1.7 petabytes of storage will be installed to transform the efficiency of the facility. This will enable more ambitious science to be undertaken. This investment will be used to launch a transformation from petascale to exascale problems and communicate the lessons learned to other research communities in Australia.Read moreRead less

In 2009, the Nobel Prize in physiology was awarded Drs. Blackburn, Greider and Szostak for discoveries on telomeres. This project will investigate how telomeres not only cap chromosomes from destruction by free radicals, but also have a key role in life itself, in their influence on ageing, longevity, ornaments and lifetime reproductive success.

Physics-aware machine learning for data-driven fire risk prediction. The 2019/20 Australian fire season was unprecedented in its extent, impact, and the response of fire agencies. In this project, we aim to answer the question: was the scale of these fires driven by known drivers of fire (drought, weather, fuels and ignitions), or were fundamentally new undescribed processes and phenomena involved? We will accomplish this by developing an innovative, physics-aware machine learning model of fire ....Physics-aware machine learning for data-driven fire risk prediction. The 2019/20 Australian fire season was unprecedented in its extent, impact, and the response of fire agencies. In this project, we aim to answer the question: was the scale of these fires driven by known drivers of fire (drought, weather, fuels and ignitions), or were fundamentally new undescribed processes and phenomena involved? We will accomplish this by developing an innovative, physics-aware machine learning model of fire risk and spread, trained and validated on a two-decade satellite fire record. The predictive ability of the model will be tested on the 2019/20 fire season to determine if novel drivers of fire can be identified, and the model itself will be operationalised into a novel short-to-mid term fire risk prediction tool.
