This research project aims to develop the theory and application of integrated landscape restoration in a fragmented agricultural region - the Mt. Lofty Ranges of South Australia. Spatially explicit priorities will be set for the type and location of habitat to be restored for the benefit of the natural biodiversity within a physical environmental, economic and social context. Heuristic and optimisation models will be created within a Geographic Information System (GIS) and assessed for their ability to set such priorities in integrated landscape restoration. The techniques will help sustain ecological, physical and human systems in many other over-cleared regions.Read moreRead less
Drivers of the live pet trade in Australian reptiles. This project aims to understand the complex trade in live Australian reptiles. The global pet trade is a major threat to biodiversity. This project expects to generate critical new knowledge for combatting the current and future illegal trade in Australian wildlife. This project aims to understand the complex trade in live Australian reptiles. The global pet trade is a major threat to biodiversity. This project expects to generate critical new knowledge for combatting the current and future illegal trade in Australian wildlife. Using surveillance of domestic and overseas online markets, and innovative statistical and simulation-based approaches to inform conservation decision-making, the expected outcomes of this project include an enhanced capacity to conserve native species and to monitor and disrupt the complex illegal wildlife trade. This should provide significant benefits in terms of biodiversity conservation and safeguarding Australia’s unique and ecologically important native reptile species.Read moreRead less

Carbon sequestration in soil has been recognised as one of the possible measures through which greenhouse gas emissions can be mitigated. The major processes involved in carbon sequestration in soil include chemical immobilisation of carbon with soil particles and physical protection in the pores of soil microaggregates. These two processes are mediated through the functional relationships of soil organic matter and clay mineral interactions in soils. This project investigates nanoscale organomineral association underlying microaggregate formation and stability, as well as the distribution and microbial decomposition of carbon within microaggregates using a suite of advanced spectroscopic, molecular and isotopic techniques.Read moreRead less
Cost-effective integrated engineering and "community partnerships" solution to a latent water policy issue: private dam management and flood safety. Project aims to further develop an engineering model for cost-effective innovative flood safety design/review for private dams in Southeastern Australia and integrate this with community impact assessment. Together, this is a "community partnerships" solution to a significant water policy vacuum on private dam safety and flood policy. Expected outcomes: improved risk transparency for dam owners and State Government, minimising costs of failures, ie. loss of life, damage to public and private infrastructure and environment; giving owners an affordable and effective design/review procedure to better manage their dams, providing data on community responses and water law reform proposals consonant with international best-practice.Read moreRead less
A surface functionality based approach for the risk assessment of manufactured nanomaterials in the environment. Manufactured nanoparticles are increasingly present in the environment yet their risk assessment is fraught with analytical challenges. This project will use customised nanoparticles with unique isotopic signatures and surface properties to circumvent key difficulties and support novel investigations into nanoparticle stability, fate and toxicity.
Using ancient DNA to investigate the environmental impacts of climate change and humans through time. This project will provide important information about how climate change and human impact have effected our environment over the past 50,000 years, removing many of the large mammals and altering the landscape. It is critical that the background to our current environment is properly understood if we are to predict the effects of on-going changes such as global warming. This project will provide important information about how climate change and human impact have effected our environment over the past 50,000 years, removing many of the large mammals and altering the landscape. It is critical that the background to our current environment is properly understood if we are to predict the effects of on-going changes such as global warming. The research will concentrate on the effects of climate change on large mammals in North and South America, New Zealand, Australia and Africa over this time period, and will examine the additional impact of humans in each location.Read moreRead less
Functional characterisation of contaminant-nanoparticle associations. Nanoparticles present in the environment modify the movement and toxicity of contaminants. This project targets key gaps that hinder the ability to predict the fate and behaviour of environmental contaminants; this will lead to the optimisation of legislative framework and the management/remediation of contaminated sites (for example, mine sites, landfills).
The fate and toxicity of nanoparticles in the terrestrial environment. This research aims to provide the knowledge needed to understand the fate and effects of new nanoparticulate metal products in Australian landscapes. The movement and environmental effects of manufactured nanoparticulates are unknown, partly because of the difficulty of measuring and detecting these nano-products in the environment. This project will develop techniques to identify manufactured nanoparticulate metals in soils, ....The fate and toxicity of nanoparticles in the terrestrial environment. This research aims to provide the knowledge needed to understand the fate and effects of new nanoparticulate metal products in Australian landscapes. The movement and environmental effects of manufactured nanoparticulates are unknown, partly because of the difficulty of measuring and detecting these nano-products in the environment. This project will develop techniques to identify manufactured nanoparticulate metals in soils, and to determine the potential adverse effects of these products on plants and soil organisms. This will indicate the need, if any, for controls on the disposal or dispersal of nano-sized metal products in the terrestrial environment.Read moreRead less

The project aims at intelligent adaptive agent models for lakes and rivers in order to improve understanding and proactive management of these highly complex ecosystems. Little is known about species succession in freshwater ecosystems in response to local and global environmental changes. Evolutionary algorithms embodied in differential equations, neural networks and rules allow adaptive agents to simulate emergent structures and behaviours of algae and zooplankton communities interacting by competition and predation. The agents are trained and tested by ecological time-series of twelve lakes and rivers, and validated for the Mediterranean Myponga Reservoir, South Australia, and the temperate Burrinjuck Reservoir, NSW.Read moreRead less

Invasive species have major economic and environmental impacts in Australia and are a major cause of extinctions worldwide. Monitoring is crucial for the timely control of invasive species in sensitive environments. Early detection increases the probability of eradication and increased accuracy in detection reduces the impact of control programs on non-target species. Efficient monitoring also is crucial in determining whether eradication has succeeded. Search Theory has been applied for over 60 years in a wide range of non-biological monitoring problems, resulting in large increases in target detection rates. Gains of a similar magnitude in invasive species detection would greatly enhance Australia's capacity to manage these threats.Read moreRead less
