The main focus of this project is to develop data fusion techniques for clamp force estimation and optimum utilisation of redundant information in a brake-by-wire system. Efficient integration of redundant information in an EMB system is expected to significantly improve the reliability and fault tolerance of such systems. The need for costly and complicated clamp force measurement sensors in electric callipers will also be eliminated by accurate estimation of the clamp force signal, through fusion of more readily available measurements. Development of the proposed data fusion techniques influences the design of future EMBs and enhances the functionality of existing brake-by-wire systems.Read moreRead less

This project aims to exploit the behaviour of semiconducting polymer chains in solution to realise high-performance polymer electronics. This project will be achieved through a combination of simulation, theory, and X-ray measurements of solution-phase chain conformation and device studies. The project expects to create new predictive understanding of how the self organisation of semiconducting polymer chains determines thin-film microstructure and thus charge transport in thin-film devices. Expected outcomes include new materials and processes for high-performance polymer transistors and enhanced interdisciplinary research partnerships. This approach should hasten the development of new technologies based on lightweight flexible electronic devices.Read moreRead less
Damage Tolerance Approach in Designing and Maintaining Truck Trailers. This project aims to develop a damage tolerance approach in designing and maintaining truck trailers. Combined with field test and computational simulation, machine learning will be used to generate loading spectrums. Following the damage tolerance philosophy, a mature approach in aerospace industry, the fatigue crack growth and the fatigue life will be predicted. In addition, structural optimisation will be applied in trailer design. This project expects to revolutionize the design and maintenance practices in Australian truck trailer industry. It should provide significant benefits, such as prolonging the life cycle of truck trailers, reducing the tare weight and increasing operating profit, to both trailer producers and users.Read moreRead less
Improved image analysis: maximised statistical use of geometry/shape constraints. This project will improve image analysis to apply such applications as 3D street-scape reconstruction, synthetic inserts into video for special effects, autonomous navigation, and scene understanding. It will do so by maximally exploiting the geometry of planar surfaces (e.g. walls) and straight lines and other simple geometric shapes.

The Australian naturalistic driving study: innovation in road safety research and policy. A revolutionary new approach, the naturalistic driving study, will investigate what people actually do when they drive, in normal and safety-critical situations. It will provide Australia with answers to some intractable, high priority, road safety problems that cannot be answered using current methods, thereby saving hundreds of lives.
